Communication Inhibitors (Barriers)
Part I: Background
Communication is simply the passage of information from one person to another; it connects people to the culture, the society and the work place. Despite its importance, there are several challenges or factors that face communication every other day. Several inhibitors and barriers affect effective communication in the workplace. The healthcare industry is a very important place in life and communication is common thus if affected, then the delivery of healthcare services might be disoriented. The healthcare sector relies so much on communication and when it fails, then the delivery of services are also likely to fail and this goes a long way; the communication barriers between the nurses and the nurse leaders have led to poor delivery of the healthcare services.
I have been practicing in the healthcare sector for several years and based on the experience; it is noticeable that some of the barriers to the effective communication include; cultural barriers, language/linguistic barriers, impatience in the listener and also not understanding the receiver. Several nurses fail because they do not listen carefully to the leaders while patients have cultural and language barriers. Therefore, these communication barriers should be addressed in the most important way. Comment by James Getman: Describe your environment on more detail: Number of personnel? Physical size?
Part II: Definition of Communication Inhibitors
· Cultural barriers-in communication, the cultural differences leads to the lack of understanding between people; like in the healthcare sector, cultural differences are very essential among the patients as they communicate to service providers as well as among the nurses.
· Language/linguistic barriers-when people speak and understand difference languages, they cannot communicate effectively.
· Impatience in the listener-effective communication occurs when the listener takes all the instructions, however, if the listener does not take all the key points, there will be no effective communication.
· Not understanding the receiver-the receiver and the sender should understand each other keenly and in equal measure; failure to which, there will be ineffective communication.

Part IV: Evaluation
Based on the healthcare organization that I work for; they are tryng to achieve a effective communication, even though sometimes it gets hard to actually communicate effectively. One thing for sure is that the main communication challenges are often seen in various categories; doctor to nurses, doctor to patients, nurse leader to the nurses as well as the nurses to the patients. Therefore, I can rate the communication in this organization at 60 out of 100; there is trial and effectiveness in the way that people communicate. However, whenever a new doctor from a different country comes, it is often difficult to communicate unless a translator is brought in to support the process. The barriers result from the differences in cultural beliefs between the doctrines of the modern medication and those of the patients who believe in the traditional ways of healing and treatment. Therefore, it is upon the people involved in challenges to work on the necessary areas. In the recent case, nurse leaders gave instructions to the nurses; it seems like the nurses never understood because they were not patent enough to take instructions and the leader did not understand the nurses; the lack of communication led to a serious conflict in the delivery of services. Therefore, the management of the hospital should address the issues resulting from the communication barriers and the challenges.
