Predict 1. In this demonstration, a solid metal will be placed into an aqueous metal ion solution. Describe at least three

different signs that a chemical reaction took place between the metal and the metallic solution.

2. In the table below, predict if a reaction (“R”) will occur or not occur (“NR”). If you predict a reaction will take place, predict the products for that reaction.

Reactants Prediction: Reaction/No Reaction Predicted Products

Fe + CuSO4 Fe + AgNO3

Cu + FeSO4 Cu + AgNO3

3. Explain your reasons for the predicted products. Use prior knowledge of the periodic table of elements to help you develop your explanations.

Observe As you watch your teacher perform the demonstration, write down your observations for the various chemical reactions in the “Observation” column. Pay attention to any signs that a chemical reaction is happening. Then, compare your predictions and your observations. In the last column, if your initial predictions were accurate to what you observed, use evidence from the observations to support your initial predictions. If your initial predictions were not accurate, use the observations gathered in the demonstration to modify your original predictions.

Reactants Observation Did a reaction occur? How do you know?

Explain 1. What did you observe to indicate a chemical reaction was taking place?

2. Below is a snippet of the periodic table. Circle or highlight the metals and aqueous solutions utilized in the demonstration.

3. Metals are ranked based on reactivity in a table called the metal activity series. More active metals are placed higher on the list while less active metals are placed lower on the list. Using the following claim–evidence–reasoning table, make and develop a claim about the reactivity of the three metals (copper, silver, and iron). A claim is a statement you make about the given factor or question. Evidence is the data or observation that supports your claim. Reasoning should tie your claim and evidence together. What patterns did you observe in the demonstration to help support your reasoning?

Analysis 1. While silver metal was not utilized in the demonstration, based on what you have observed, use the following

claim–evidence–reasoning table to develop a claim about which aqueous solutions silver metal would react in. Look for patterns in the periodic table to help you in your reasoning.

Claim Evidence Reasoning

2. Based on the metal activity series that you already developed, where do you think the following metals would be ranked: Al, Mg, Na? Use observations from the demonstration and the periodic table to help justify your ranking.

Asking Questions Write down at least two scientific questions that you have about the demonstration that you observed. A good scientific question (a) builds on what you already know (b) can be tested by an experiment or data that you can collect and (c) leads to other questions.
