Intro (Stella)

Our team decided to investigate into the topic of GPA and parents status to see if there is any relationship between the two.

By investigating the factor of the relationships between the students and parents marital status, it will allow us to see if strong relationships affect GPA. There might be a strong correlation that a strong relationship between parents’ education level, number of siblings, hours spent in studying and credit hours taken in semester correlate to a higher GPA. Focusing on how family relationships affecting students’ GPA, we are looking at the parents’ education level, and how their degree of education relates to the marital status. And how these factors affect the performance of students at school. With that being said, depending on the mother and father’s degree, we might assume that the student might also have a higher GPA.

This report will show the statistics we found in the following area: credit hours taken, mother’s education level, father’s education level, siblings relationships, and time put into studies.

GPA & Hours (Stella)

Research Question: How does the credit hours taken in semester affect the GPA of a student?

This question is related to our reach topic because the hours that a student takes is affected by how the family support to a certain extent. Some students might force themselves to finish their studies sooner than later because they wanted to get a job soon so they can support their living; some might take time because the family supports them and wanted the students to take things easily and enjoy school life. We want to find out how students averagely do when they are taking more credit hours and taking average credit hours. And we want to know if they perform better if they take less hours or it does not apply to a general phenomenon.

The data set is collected from students enrolled in the class SPEA-K300. There are 318 students took the survey that we are using as our data set. In the data set, we found averagely, students take 15 credit hours in this semester, and most of the students take 15 credit hours. The minimum credit hours taken is 3 credits, and the most is 21 credits.

GPA & Parents Marital Status

Research Question: How does the student’s parent’s marital status affect their GPA?

This question is related to our research topic because a student’s parent’s marital status can affect a student’s GPA. This factor could affect a student’s GPA depending on the parents. This may allow us to think that if a student’s parents are married, they might have a higher GPA. We want to collect the data and figure out if there is any correlation in student’s GPAs and their parent’s marital status.

From the data collected from students enrolled in SPEA-K300 during the fall of 2018, we have found that 183 students recorded that their parents are married. This allowed us to find that the mode, or most of the students said their parents were married. There were 68 students that recorded that their parents never married and 55 students recorded that their parents were divorced. There are 5 students that recorded their parents as separated and 7 recorded their parents marital status as widowed.

GPA & Siblings

Research Question: Does the amount of siblings a student has affect their GPA?

This question relates to our topic in the fact that maybe the number of siblings a student has an affect on their GPA. It would be interesting to see how students with different numbers of siblings have or don’t have an affect on their GPAs.

The most common number of siblings that a student has could either help or harm a student's GPA. With less siblings, students may not have older family members who attended college, and could have given them tips for success at university. With more siblings, if they're younger, students may not have been able to develop good studying habits, due to helping with their younger siblings.

The students number of siblings range from 0 to 13. Thirty students recorded themselves as not having any siblings. There were 121 students that reported they have one sibling. 86 students reported to have two siblings. 49 students reported they have three siblings. 16 students reported to have four siblings. 4 students reported having five siblings. 5 students reported having six siblings. 2 students reported having seven siblings. Another 2 students reported having eight siblings. No students reported to have nine siblings. Another 2 students reported having ten siblings. One student reported having thirteen siblings.
