Understanding Untreated ADHD Comment by Sharon: OK, but what is the specific issue you are focussing on here? This is quite broad. E.g. the consequences of not treating ADHD in terms of offending behaviour … remember you need to have a forensic focus is you are doing a forensic psych MS

Untreated ADHD
The ADHD we are dealing with in this paper is the impulsive or hyperactive type of ADHD experienced by a 16 year old boy who was admitted in the hospital and had a history of criminal behaviors, (Fayyad et al., 2017). This type is the least common type but its effects are extreme like leading smoking, violence and excessive drinking as seen from this 16 year old. ADHD is among the most researched areas as far as the mental health of adolescents and children are concerned. It however gets to adults too. Comment by Sharon: Pls focus on ADHD as defined by the DSM.
The main cause is not known however. It is believed that it is a genetic disorder which is based on the brain. It is said that there is a brain chemical known as dopamine, a neurotransmitter chemical and it is normally found in the brain of children with this disorder, (Mooney et al., 2020). When a PET scanner was used to study the disorder it is seen that he had a lower function on some parts of his brain, which led him to being unable to control movement, social judgement or even attention.
Causes
The first cause is the anatomy and function of the brain. When there is a lower level of activity in some parts of a person’s brain that control social judgement a person can have ADHD. This is because it is involved with such kind of behavior. When a person has problems with controlling their social judgement then it is possible for them to be criminals. Another cause is head injuries. A person’s brain can be distorted when a person gets a head injury and this can lead to the having ADHD.
While there are different types but the one involved with criminal behavior is the hyperactive or impulsive ADHD which makes a person violent and a criminal. The last cause is that pit is a genetic disorder that is passed on from people with genes as yours. This means that some people are just born with it because either of their parents or relatives had it. It is associated with criminal behaviors because when a person already has it, they cannot control themselves because the part of their brain in charge of metabolism and controlling social behaviors is slow and therefore the person do not think before they act. Comment by Sharon: ? Comment by Sharon: You are talking about causes of ADHD but there are no references, suggesting that this is solely your opinion. Pls refer to reputable sources about ADHD.
Prevention and most important cause to the problem
These causes could not have been prevented because it is believed that it was genetic, however, if the disorder was noticed at an earlier age, maybe the problem would have been prevented. This is because the boy would have booked a therapy session that would have assisted him early enough before things got out of hand as much as they had, (Fayyad et al., 2017). The cause that I think lead to the problem of indulging in criminal behavior is the fact that it was a genetic disorder. There is no way he could have avoided it or even controlled himself because his brain was operating on a lower rate compared to children his age. Comment by Sharon: Is ADHD ONLY genetic?
Effects
The first effect is lack of restrain. This is what causes a person to do something and anything that they think about without restraining themselves. Their brains, because they function on a low level then cannot differentiate between good or right like with that boy. He did not understand why he was not supposed to smoke. Another effect is fidgeting. Unlike a normal person who has things in control and is calm, a person with ADHD cannot stay calm, (Mooney et al., 2020). Which makes them feel as if there is something they need to do like for the boy either drinking or smoking to try and get themselves to be doing something that does not involve him being just sited around.
When admitted the boy was either constantly knocking the table or when talking to someone, his kept on playing with his phone or whatever he had in his hand. The last effect is repetition of words or even actions. A person with ADHD keeps on repeating things that they have already done regardless of whether are not they are annoying the rest, (Danielson et al., 2018). Mostly people might be mistaken as being stubborn but it is an effect of this disorder. For this boy who had been going to school drunk, the teachers thought that he was ignoring them while in real sense he could not control himself.
Reaction to findings
After having an encounter with this case I finally understood why there are so many cases of alcoholics and drug addicts who cannot get themselves to stop and I got to learn that some of these small things like repetition of some words, or some people that are easily irritable or repulsive and hyperactive might really be people undergoing some mental problems and the more it is left unattended to the worse it gets. ADHD is a disorder that gets worse with years of not been treated and without knowing its symptoms, you might think someone is just rude or rebellious.
Conclusion
Impulsive or hyperactive type of ADHD is the least common type but its effects are extreme. . It is believed that it is a genetic disorder which is based on the brain. It is said that there is a brain chemical known as dopamine. The cause that I think lead to the problem of indulging in criminal behavior is the fact that it was a genetic disorder. The effects are lack of restrain, repetition and fidgeting.
Jailya, I’m a bit concerned about this paper. You seem to have misunderstood what was required. You need to focus on one forensic psych problem – so ADHD generally is not suitable, as there is nothing forensic about it. And this week you needed to discuss causes and effects. E.g. if you look at the link between ADHD and offending behaviour generally, or link with aggression: What causes people with ADHD to engage in offending beaviour? And you needed to discuss three potential causes and effects in some depth, whereas you only discussed one cause of a non-forensic topic. If you take on board the suggestions I have made, you could bring this back into a forensic psych topic. Pls make sure you include doi in ref list, otherwise it’s the right style, well done. Please do get in touch if you would like to discuss further.
