Statement of the problem

Criminal behaviors have been on the rise in the world today. There are many forms of criminal behaviors ranging from petty crimes to high degree crimes like murder and robbery with violence. The technological evolution has made it worse because now we have to deal with extra crimes on the internet, for example, cyber bullying. In one way or the other, these crimes affect us whether directly or indirectly. Most of the crimes that people commit go unpunished either because the victim does not know that that is a crime that needs to be reported or because they are forced to stay quiet about it (Shelden and Vasiliev, 2017).

To be able to prosecute perpetrators of criminal behaviors, the victims need to report these cases to the authorities and for them to do so; they must understand the different forms of crime. Criminal behaviors include such as anti-social behaviors or improper behavior in public, illegal possession of firearms and drug abuse and trafficking. These two have been listed as the leading causes of theft, robbery with violence and have been linked to many cases of homicides and murder. It is also a crime to engage in fraud which is the illegal acquiring of money from unsuspecting victims. Rape and domestic violence are among the most serious yet rarely reported forms of crime (Shelden and Vasiliev, 2017). There are various reasons why victims choose to stay silent about rape and domestic violence. There is also a clear connection between the two in that apart from the usual fights that are the most common form of domestic violence, the violence also comes in the form of rape. Domestic violence includes the abuse of a child, partner or elder. Usually, the victim is helpless and the villain takes advantage of their victim's vulnerability. Cases of domestic violence have been on the rise not only in America but in the world as a whole. This is even though we are in the age of civilization; the 21st century. Most of these cases often end up in homicide or suicide cases (Gurnell, 2019). Comment by Sharon Xuereb: Is this what your Capstone is about? That’s fine. Most of these cases go unreported because the victims are not aware that they are criminal cases. Cases of domestic violence can be economical, physical, sexual or psychological. Stalking is also a form of domestic violence. Victims of domestic violence also fail to report these cases for fear of their perpetrators. Children fail to report these cases because they fear their parents will punish them and spouses fear to report because their spouses will hunt them down and make them pay. Since most of the time, the perpetrator of domestic violence is the breadwinner, the victim fears the economic challenges that the family may encounter if the person goes to jail. Sadly, according to statistics, the number of victims of domestic violence is expected to rise in the next twenty years (Gurnell, 2019). Many factors have been linked to criminal behaviors. There are biological factors that imply that we are who we are. In this case, people commit crimes because they are born in the families of criminals. Childhood experiences and how we are raised as determines how we behave in the future. A child who is raised in a bad situation and at the risk of crime is likely to become a criminal. Environmental factors are also a concern for example a child raised among drug traffickers is also likely to go into trafficking. Drugs and substance abuse has also been linked to many cases of crime (Bonta and Andrews, 2016). Comment by Sharon Xuereb: This is a different topic entirely, i.e. why people engage in crime

Due to the many advanced cases of criminal behaviors and the numerous factors that are related to these cases, it is becoming difficult to control criminal activities. Most of these crimes lead to other high degree crimes meaning that there is an interconnection between these crimes. Cases of drug and substance abuse have been linked to theft and robbery with violence while most domestic violence leads to homicides. The fact that most of these crimes go unreported makes it hard to prosecute the perpetrators thus making it difficult to control criminal behaviors.

Jailya, this was an interesting read, and it’s good that you read some reputable sources. However this was too general for a Capstone. See my comments re focus, i.e. you need to select a topic (e.g. the under-reporting of child physical abuse) and focus on that throughout – do not mention anything else. Remember this is a short Capstone, so you need to be very focused, to ensure you discuss your topic in sufficient depth.

Please do attend to feedback. I notice that last week I asked you to avoid citing dissertations, however you are still citing a dissertation; and I also encouraged you to narrow your focus.
