Packaging Design Brief

Product: Juice

Product Information: To be completed by Marketing and forwarded to Package Engineering.

Product description: The product is a high-end beverage juice product. The product is non-alcoholic and contains several different fruit juices.

Production of product: The product will be produced in California and shipped by truck to 20 different distribution centers in the United States and then will be distributed to stores in cases of 24.

In-store sales method: The product will be displayed on the store shelf with other high-end juice products.

Price Point of product: The product will have a high price point within the range of juice products.

Specific requirements of package in the store: The package must show the brand name and legal and nutritional information.

Primary Package

(The package that comes in direct contact with the product, the retail package)

Describe the function(s) that must be served by the primary package for this product (include all that apply).

Liquid and Food Containment ability - In this brief the primary function of the package is to contain and hold juice, so it is imperative that the package is structurally sound if it is to successfully hold any type of food or liquid products.

Package Safety - Due to the fact that the packaging will contain a beverage product it must meet the requirements of being safe to hold items that are meant for human consumption.

Marketing and Sales - The primary packaging should be designed in a manner that will entice customer to purchase it on sight. It will be on display with other high-end juice products so the packaging should attract attention and be able to stand out amongst the many other juice choices that consumer will have. Vibrant colors and eye-catching font for the product name can be used to attract consumers, well-placed images of the product logo and product nutritional information as it is required.

What is your recommendation for the material(s) that should be used for the primary package?

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE)

Please justify your material(s) selection. Include the advantages of this material for this purpose and the disadvantages or concerns of using this material.

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) is a plastic packaging that provides the most recyclability of the plastic packaging materials that are available for use. This serves as one advantage because it can attract eco-conscious consumers if you include this fact in the advertising for the juice or display this fact on the packaging. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) is also an FDA approved packaging material and is a commonly used material in liquid packaging.

The advantages Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) are that it has the most recyclability, it is also an FDA approved packaging material, and it is also a transparent material which allow the consumer to visually view the product like the containers used with Tropicana orange juice or most milk jugs. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) will also provide a reasonable level of protection to the juice since it is not fragile like glass and should be able to take on some punishment. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) also gives the ability to be molded so many shapes can be constructed to make the product stand out amongst its competitors.

The disadvantages of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PETE) are that it will not be able to be reused as over time it can lose some of its rigidity, as some plastic materials Plastic bottles are typically meant for one use, and reusability is difficult because after time they tend to become flimsy and end up being thrown away. They take a long time to decompose if not sent to recycling.

What method of printing do you recommend for the primary package?

In-Mold Labeling (IML) will be the chosen printing method.

Please justify your recommendation of print method. Include the advantages of this print method for this package and the disadvantages or concerns of using this print method.

In-Mold Labeling (IML) will provide the appearance of the bottle actually having no label at all. The advantage of In-Mold Labeling (IML) printing is that it will allow us to obtain a higher quality look to the label since we are marketing our product has a higher quality juice. In-Mold Labeling (IML) will allow us to display our juice in a way that will make the consumer realize that it is a higher quality beverage. In-Mold Labeling (IML) will also provide us with a larger color pallet to choose from and also the ability to add accents to the color to make the packaging more eye-catching

The disadvantages of In-Mold Labeling (IML) is that it does come with a slower production time than other methods. Also, we will require extra equipment to with the added steps of the production cycle, which means that a further investment will have to be made into the production budget of this juice product.

Have you made any assumptions in choosing the material or print method?

My assumption is that we will use one wrap-around label to display the product name and logo and the product nutrition facts, rather than a two-piece front and back label which would take longer to print and affix to the juice bottle, slowing down the overall production cycle.

What environmental concerns must be addressed for the primary packaging?

The gleaming environmental concern is that the bottles used for the primary packaging will need to be recycle as they will be made from plastic which takes a massive length of time to decompose. It may be worth including an attention-grabbing recycling logo on the label to help with this concern.

Secondary Package

(The packaging used to ship the product from manufacturing location through distribution and to the retail store)

Describe the function(s) that must be served by the secondary package for this product (include all that apply).

The main function of the secondary package will be to hold the primary packages during transportation, and secondly protecting the primary package not only during transportation through the various modes of transportation but also transportation throughout the distribution facilities.

What is your recommendation for the material(s) that should be used for the secondary package?

For the secondary package, I recommend using a corrugated box-double walled.

Please justify your material(s) selection. Include the advantages of this material for this purpose and the disadvantages or concerns of using this material.

The corrugated box is used all over the industry with great success of protecting its contents and structurally it is strong and dependable. I recommend the double-walled construction just add a small amount of extra protection and the ability to stack more which means that more can be moved at one time.

The advantage of using corrugated boxes as our secondary packaging is that they are a very widely used and common material so sourcing it will be simple. In addition, corrugate is also one of the most widely recycle materials so we will be helping the environment I that aspect as well. Another advantage is that corrugate is reasonable inexpensive to will not be destroying our entire production budget on secondary packaging.

The disadvantages of the corrugate boxes is that they are vulnerable to environmental factors not only outside in elements but also the warehouses and transportation vehicles. As corrugate is a paper product contact with liquid like rain or other wet substances can weaken the structural integrity of the box. Humidity can also have the same effects on the corrugate material as well, so it is important to account for the climates that the boxes will be moving through.

What method of printing do you recommend for the secondary package?

The chosen method of printing for the secondary package is flexography.

Please justify your recommendation of print method. Include the advantages of this print method for this package and the disadvantages or concerns of using this print method.

Flexography printing is a widely used printing process for printing on all different types of paper and boxes. It has replaced the past methods of using printing presses and can print directly onto the corrugate or onto labels that can be affixed to the outside of the boxes.

The advantage of using the method of flexography is that it is an inexpensive way to obtain a quality printed image. Another advantage is that it is a quick process as well, meaning that the boxes can filled with our product faster on moved out faster to consumers.

In our application of flexography there really is no disadvantage since we will only be using it to print on the secondary packaging which does not have to special in appearance as it will not be seen by the consumer.

Have you made any assumptions in choosing the material or print method?

I am assuming that there is the potential for the corrugate boxes will be exposed to less than optimal conditions at some point during transport as it will be distributed to many places.

What environmental concerns must be addressed for the secondary packaging?

The only environmental concerns I foresee for the secondary packaging is the environmental changes that can threaten the structural integrity of the corrugate, which is recyclable so like the primary packaging will need to be recycled. However, if not it does not take as long to decompose as the primary plastic packaging would.
