Grading rubric Cover Letter & Résumé

Cover Letter – 20 points

____ / 4 Contact information is professional, complete, and clearly presented (for yourself and the employer)

____/ 2 Letter is addressed to a specific person (or title) within the organization, with a professional salutation. May also use “To Whom It May Concern” if name or title not listed.

____/ 8 Contains three or four paragraphs that include:

· Pertinent information that can’t be expressed in the résumé

· The specific job title of interest in the first or second paragraph

· An expression of thanks in the last paragraph

· A call to action or statement that creates expectation of next steps in the last paragraph

Note – if letter is a mere rehashing of your résumé you may lose up to all eight of these points depending on the egregiousness of the rehashing. Points lost for rehashing: -____

· Functional bullet points start with action verbs (past for past jobs, present for current jobs)

· Narrative is presented in complete, articulate sentences

· Writing presents correct spelling, grammar, syntax, consistent punctuation
