Week 8 Journal Presentation

Mla format reference

Philosophy is less a subject like History, Math or Literature than a way of thinking analytically about the world. Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom for wisdom’s sake. For the last eight weeks you have been exploring philosophical issues that have challenged your assumptions about the nature of truth, reality and knowledge in the 21st century. Along the way you have been asking critical questions, perhaps struggled to understand what philosophers have been writing about but have come to some conclusions, perhaps only preliminary, about the nature of the issues put before you. Your final journal presentation in this course is an opportunity for you to explain this journey of thought to your fellow classmates and, perhaps also, to yourself.

Technical Requirements of the Journal Presentation

· MS PowerPoint .pptx

· Audio about 10 minutes (1 min to 1:15 minute per slide). If you are presenting this in front of a class, your presentation should be close to 10 minutes. If you are submitting this presentation online, consult these tutorials on how to record a PowerPoint slideshow with audio narration and slide timings:

(1)  Microsoft, "Record a slide show with narration and slide timings." support.microsoft.com (2021)

Presentation Guidelines

· Structure the presentation as a journey (employ a visual metaphor like a car, ship, road, highway, plane, spaceship, wormhole, jet etc)

· Minimum of 8 slides (1 for introduction, 1 each for weeks 3-8, 1 for conclusions). You do not have to provide slides for weeks 1-2. It’s ok to have more slides than the minimum but remember that your presentation should not exceed 10 mins.

· Introduction slide should include three elements: (a) your name, (b) summary highlights of your journey, (c ) how your visual metaphor(s) help to explain your journey.

· Slides for Weeks 3-8 should each present three elements: (a) your assumptions before you learned about the subject; (b) a summary of new knowledge you learned that week; (c) how this new knowledge challenged your assumptions and led to some new conclusions for you. Use your journal entries, discussion questions, readings to fill in these elements of your presentation.

· Conclusion slide should include the following elements: What overall conclusions (plural) you have regarding the mind, consciousness, truth, knowledge, and/or reality in the 21st century, and the value of philosophy. Spend the most time here, preferably.

· Use big fonts (18+ point Arial is preferable).

· Use text for talking points, summary only. DO NOT use whole sentences, or a wall of text. Your audience will listen to you to get the narrative and explanation. Plan for about 1 min to 1:15 minute of audio per slide; Shoot for 10 minutes for the entire presentation.
