Journal Article Summary & Critique Citation

• In APA style at the top of the paper

• Example: o Goldin-Meadow, S., Cook, S. W, & Mitchell, Z. A. (2009). Gesturing gives children new ideas about math. Current Directions in Psychological Science, 17 (5), 313-317.

Part I: The Summary

Introduction

• Give a brief introduction (1-3 sentences) with purpose of study, research questions, and any other necessary background information

o Why was the study conducted?

o What was it about?

Procedures

• Describe the specifics of what this study involved (e.g., methodology). o Participants/Subjects

▪ How were they grouped/selected?

▪ What did they have the participants/subjects do?

o Setting

o Procedures

o Variables

▪ What was measured?

Findings

• Discuss the major findings and results.

o How useful or significant are they?

Conclusions

• Summarize the researcher’s conclusions.

• What was/were the major outcome(s) of the study?

Part II:

The Critique

• Your evaluation of the study.

• Strengths and weaknesses of the study.

o What did you learn from the study?

o In what ways might you apply the results in your profession as an SLP?
