Journal Article Critique Guidelines

The purpose of this assignment is to assess your ability to (1) read an empirical journal article, (2) critique various aspects of the article, and (3) demonstrate knowledge of the course material. Use the concepts discussed in chapters 6 - 8 & 10, to carefully review and evaluate the assigned journal article. Respond to the items below in an essay format. Each student is required to independently answer the prompts; do NOT discuss the article, questions, or your answers with other students, faculty, or anyone else except the instructor. Length: maximum three typed pages. Please see Formatting Requirements on page 8 of the syllabus. Please see Beach Board for the rubric associated with this assignment. Electronically submit the paper to BB’s respective Dropbox.

Required Items to Be Critiqued

1. Discuss what is the problem being studied.

2. Identify the study’s research question(s). Explain the study’s hypothesis(es).

3. Discuss the study’s specific aim(s) or purpose(s).

4. Discuss the characteristics (demographics) of the subjects.

5. Discuss how the researcher(s) selected the subjects.

6. Identify the study’s sample size.

7. Identify the independent variables (those manipulated by the researcher) and dependent variables (variables observed for change).

8. Identify the study design.

9. Discuss the measuring instruments the researcher(s) used.

10. Explain how the researcher(s) collected the data.

11. Identify how many observations were made.

12. Discuss how the data were analyzed (data analysis techniques).

13. Discuss the results.

14. Discuss the conclusions.

15. Discuss the implications for practice in public health. Include a discussion on the ways in which this article contributes to public health surveillance.

16. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses that are represented in the article.

17. Discuss how well the outcome of the study was specified.

18. Explain the degree to which you agree/disagree with the author’s(s’) conclusions.

19. Discuss the extent to which the findings can be generalized (external validity).

20. Explain how would you improve the research study.

21. 3 typed and double-spaced pages, essay format. (Minimum and maximum)

22. Grammar, spelling, syntax

23. Correctly cited in APA (7th edition) format.
