Studied about communicable and infectious diseases and their impact on public health

After a detailed study of the communicable and infectious diseases, I now believe that the keys to disease prevention and disabilities limitation are prevention and intervention measures based on a detailed understanding of the natural history of the disease from the prepathogenesis period to pathogenesis period.

Learned about various communicable diseases such as Tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and Cholera. I learned about the natural history of any disease of men from the production of stimulus stage during the prepathogenesis period to the early pathogenesis, discernible early lesions, and advanced disease and convalescence stages during the period of pathogenesis. While health education and promotion are effective during prepathogenesis, prompt diagnosis through screening, and rehabilitation measures are effective during the pathogenesis period.

Researched the CDC website about Cholera and posted paper on the discussion board

After a detailed research about the natural history and transmission mode of Cholera, I felt that the disease can be prevented and eradicated through good sanitary and watery treatment system. I now believe that effective primary prevention measures such as immunization and health promotion are the keys to healthcare cost reduction and disease eradication.

Learned that bacteria known as Vibrio cholera causes Cholera. Cholera is spread through the drinking of untreated water previously contaminated by the bacteria. Cholera outbreak is still common in developing countries with poor sanitary and water treatment system

Completed my SWOT paper assignment on the threats to the Englewood community’s goal of healthy people 2020.

My research on the threats to Englewood community’s goal of healthy people 2020 made me believe that the community is faced with the interlocking or interacting problems of poverty and high crime rate. I also felt that a comprehensive intervention that takes into consideration both of the above threats is the key to achieving the community’s objective of healthy people 2020.

Learned about the threats to Englewood community such as poverty, high crime rates, and intense competition from other Chicago’s communities for resources.

Studied about vulnerable populations and posted on the discussion board about a case study on a vulnerable family

After a detailed study on vulnerable population, I realized that populations can be vulnerable not because of the presence of illness or disease but due to the political and socioeconomic environments of the communities which prevent their access to healthcare. For example, an immigrant may be part of a vulnerable population due to language barrier and illegibility to health insurance like Medicaid. I believe that a community cannot achieve its goal of healthy people 2020 without providing care for it vulnerable population since the resistance of any community to the spread of an infectious agent cannot be achieved without providing immunization to majority of its population (Herd immunity).

Learned that vulnerable populations consist of people with the highest possibilities of developing poor health outcomes due to exposure to health risk or worse outcomes. I learned that vulnerability can become a cycle in which predisposing factors lead to poor outcomes which in turn increase vulnerability. For example, a mother missing a well being appointment for immunization for her child may result in the child being infected, and consequently being susceptible to another disease.
