Step One: Summarizing

In “Divergent” by Veronica Roth, Exposition in the novel happens when the protagonist Beatrice is supposed to choose factions and each faction has a trait. Once a child in this society gets to sixteen they are supposed to choose between the five factions; Erudite, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Abnegation. He is confused about which faction she should pick at the ceremony. Rising action of the novel is seen where Beatrice receives her results and she has three factions Erudite, Abnegation and Dauntless which meant that she was Divergent and she is warned not to tell anyone her results because it was dangerous to be divergent, (Roth, 2012). She is confused and settles for Dauntless where her name is changed to Tris. Climax begins when Eric is about to kill Four and Tris has to stop the pretence of being brainwashed by the Dauntless members so as to save his life. The climax ends when Tris escaped the Dauntless headquarters.

Step Two: Responding

Personally, I believe that the novel provides a powerful message about identity and Tris is faced with a complication of whether to choose between staying in the Abnegation faction with her family or to move to another faction to start afresh because she is Divergent. In general, I believe that Divergent places so much emphasis on coming into terms with an individual’s identity and protagonist has to accept that she can never fit in any faction perfectly and has to form her own path by making choices on her own.

Step Three: Analysing

The main problem facing the main character in the novel is the fact that she has to hide that she is Divergent. Tris is struggling by being brave and if anyone were to find out that she is Divergent she will be killed. She takes up the challenge of being a Dauntless to find out who she really is; identity.

Symbols: Simulation serum symbolizes the ability to control other people and distort the reality. The simulation is mostly used in aptitude tests to produce realistic scenarios that are simulated, (Roth, 2012). Tattoos among the Dauntless members are common, Tris decided to have three bird tattoos to honor her family because she had missed them. The tattoos on Four and Tris symbolized valuable things in their life and also act a symbol of bravery because it’s a painful endeavour. Mirrors symbolize the knowledge we have about one’s inner self and outer self when the aptitude test is administered to find out if one is honest, peaceful, intelligent or selfless.

Themes: Family: Tris’s mother is struggling to save her daughter despite the differences that are seen in their factions, this is love for family despite being given the chance to only stay loyal to your faction. Identity: the theme of identity is felt throughout the novel where Tris is Divergent meaning that she does not belong to any specific faction, so she made the decision to be brave and she has to struggle with choice making. Her identity is developed through her relationship with friends and family, (Roth, 2012). Fear: Tris and friends are seen fighting their fears from time to time. Values: The society is organized into five virtues honesty, peace, selflessness, intelligence and bravery where only one faction system is only acknowledged and the others are criticized hence class division.
