Journal 5 & 6
Obtain two online literary journal articles for your research paper project (based on the two short stories you have chosen from the syllabus reading list—see 6 stories highlighted in yellow) from the HCC Library online databases and save them as Word documents (or pdf files). You need to post one journal article in this assignment dropbox in mywritinglab by midnight on Sunday, 11/14/21.
Students will post ONE journal article in the dropbox and then ‘email’ BOTH journal articles to me via Canvas email as mywritinglab only has the option to post a single attachment.
Please note: you can gain access to the library databases by logging on with your student id#. As directed in the ‘how to access the HCC Library online databases’ handout posted in the document sharing list in mywritinglab, you need to obtain the sources and save them on a file saving device (flash drive), and you also need to email the sources to your personal email account. Save the full text articles as PDF files. If you are unable to save them as PDF files, you can open the articles and paste them into a Word document. If you cut and paste the article into a Word document, be sure to cut and paste the ‘full' bibliographical information for the source so you will be able to use this information later to create your Works Cited page for the research paper rough draft and final draft. Remember you need to save all ‘full text’ articles as PDF files or Word documents.
HCC provides a service called "Ask a Librarian"—you can access this feature on the HCC Library homepage. You can contact a librarian via text messaging, phone, chat feature, or email. If you are having difficulty using the databases, please contact a librarian for assistance.
How to access the HCC Library Online databases
Click on the MyEagle Student Sign-in link at the top of the HCC homepage. Then click on the HCC library icon; then click on the ‘Search and Find’ tab; then click on the databases tab; then use the alphabetical letters to click on the first letter of the databases listed below; then scroll down the list to find the database; then click on the database link and enter your search information for the story/author you plan to focus on in the paper; be sure to click on ‘full text’ to only search for full text articles. Please note: the best databases are as follows:
1) ProQuest Research Library
2) Academic Search Complete
3) General Reference Center Gold
4) Literature Resource Center
5) JSTOR
Also, once you see your list of matches on the screen, always click on the pdf option as a first choice and ‘text’ as a second choice. Save the pdf file ‘as is’. Save the ‘text’ articles as a Word document, and then be sure to use the proper filename as indicated in the mywritinglab assignment dropbox directions to save your sources.
Remember to do the following for EACH source you find:
1) Save it as a pdf file or a Word document.
2) Email it to your personal email.
3) Cite it by using the ‘cite’ or ‘citation’ tool in the database—click on the tool; then select MLA style 8th edition (or most current), and then cut and paste the entry into a Word document. The title of the Word document should be Works Cited and it should be centered. Save all entries you find in this document. Once you are done, place each entry in alphabetical order based on the first letter of the entry, change the font to courier new 12 point font, and then be sure that the entire page is double-spaced. Then type a ‘header’ only (i.e. do not type out a four line heading). Then make sure each entry is flush with the left hand margin and that 2nd lines and following are indented 5 spaces or ½”. I have posted sample works cited page in the document sharing list in mywritinglab for your review. Also, refer to the Owl at Purdue website link for more information related to a works cited page. The link is near the bottom of the reading list in the syllabus
