Planning
Speech Topic: Modernizing of museums for the 21st
General Purpose Statement (to inform, persuade, or entertain): To inform museum personnel multiple ways of modernizing and bringing museums into the 21st century and how this modernization can help them.
Audience Information: Target audience is museum employees, patrons, and donors.
Audience Considerations: [List a few important social, cultural, and ethical considerations you will need to keep in mind when addressing your audience.] Change is hard but necessary, older members might need help understanding technology, family establishments so good clean fun, most of audience should have some experience with museums.
Introduction
Attention Getter: Let me ask you a question, when was the last time you visited a museum?
Statement of Credibility: Critical and financial successes of recent models such as the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Art Lens project, the Renwick Gallery’s blockbuster Wonder exhibition and the Cooper Hewitt Pen all illustrate a growing trend towards interactive, immersive technologies as a way to capture visitor attention and remain relevant in the digital age (Saha, 2016).
Relevance Statement: Of the many challenges – organizational, financial, and cultural—that art museums must address in order to prosper in the future, realizing the full potential of working in a digital mode is without doubt the most important (Rub, 2016).
Thesis Statement: When modernizing a museum, the key to success is collection accessibility, patron engagement, and data collection to improve the museum.

Today’s museums must embrace change to survive. Let me ask you a question, when was the last time you visited a museum? For me it was two years ago, and it was a wonderful time. The modern museum is changing the way patrons interact with their collections and it is proving to be successful. Critical and financial successes of recent models such as the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Art Lens project, the Renwick Gallery’s blockbuster Wonder exhibition and the Cooper Hewitt Pen all illustrate a growing trend towards interactive, immersive technologies as a way to capture visitor attention and remain relevant in the digital age (Saha, 2016). When modernizing a museum, the key to success is collection accessibility, patron engagement, and digitally collecting data to enhance the museums. One of the ways museums are accomplishing this is ReBlink. ReBlink was created by digital artist Alex Mayhew. ReBlink, an augmented reality app that allowed users to view the museum’s collection overlaid with three-dimensional images and videos. The goal of the exhibition was to encourage visitors to look up at the art. According to the museum, 39% of visitors looked again at the images after using the app, and 84% reported “feeling engaged with the art.” (Coates, 2019). Something to remember is “Ideas about what role museums must play in society, and the value they have, frequently change (Pickering, 2020).
Body
Write the body of your speech. Make sure to support all points and sub points with evidence, explanations, and citations and use complete sentences.
Main Point One: The largest part of modernization is creating accessibility to collections. Accessibility allows different generations and people with disabilities to enjoy the museums collections. Digitalizing the collection allows for access to their full collection without everything being on display. This also allows the more delicate items to remain properly stored. This increases interest in the museum and saves display space.
Sub-point: Museums are personalizing their collections with technology and replicating artwork on 3-D printers to allow blind patrons accessibility to them. Creating opportunities for guests with low-vision or blindness patrons to touch original objects or 3D printed copies of works in the collection is a time-tested approach to making art accessible to everyone (Long, 2018). This allows people from all walks of life the ability to enjoy the wonders the museums hold. Making the museum a full family affair without having to leave anyone out because of a disability or handicap.
Sub-point: Modernizing of the collection allows not everything needing to be displayed. Artwork and other collections can remain in storage but accessed through digital technology. Many museums have made efforts to create publicly accessible digital archives with high resolution images and details for the objects in the collection (Saha, 2019). This allows the museum to have a better control of its space and preserves the collection for future generations while allowing the patron complete access to all the museum’s collection.
Transition: Modernization allows for the focus of patron engagement.
Main Point Two: Patron engagement is the focus of every museum. The more a patron enjoys themselves the better the chance they will return and bring friends. Living History Day was the best time to go to the Batfish Museum to me. Living history day had veterans that had served on submarines in the submarine to interact with the guest and answer questions. This provided me a deeper incite into the life of a submariner. The more engaged a patron is the better their experience and the more they learn.
Sub-point: Digital enhancement allows artwork to come to life. Like ReBlink, these enhancements allow users to interact with the artwork making for an interesting experience. These enhancements increase patrons’ attention to the displays and allow interaction with individual artwork. Another tool used is a telepresence devise called The Beam and it allows one on one guided tours (Nolan, 2016). These advances remove the limits facing some people and allow them to fully enjoy the museum. Less restrictions means more people through the door.
Sub-point: Interactive engagement using virtual reality allows a 3-D viewing of the artwork and sculptures. For example, when The Pérez Art Museum in Miami (PAMM) opened the first fully AR-powered art exhibition, Invasive Species, contrary to fears that visitors would be absorbed in their own experience, the museum found that audiences were sharing screens in groups and discussing their experiences together, even between strangers (Coates, 2019). These experiences will create lasting memories and patrons will return. The interactive ability of these programs allows a deeper look at art and the ability to see the sculptures from every angle. These advancements create a better understanding of the artist and their work while providing the patrons with a new level of enjoyment.
Transition: Then there is how modernization helps the museum itself.
Main Point Three: Modernization allows for better data gathering. This data creates a better understanding at what a patron enjoys and engages their attention. This data provides a better understanding of the patrons and what changes will increase attendance and improve the museum itself.
Sub-point: The data collected tells the museum what interest the patron and how they spent their time in the museum. By using digital tools with features such as tracking beacons and social sharing, museums can measure visitor behavior and interests to quantify engagement (Saha,2019). These basically track the movement of patrons through the museum and show the staff what has the patron’s attention.
Sub-point: The data provides the museum a better understanding of the experience provided by them. This allows the museum to precisely define what it means by audience engagement and use this data to inform its programming and exhibition strategy to draw audiences to the institution (Saha, 2019). The museum can use this data to improve its displays and increase enjoyment and attendance. This allows an understanding of the Patron and their experience in the museum.
Conclusion
Statement of Closure: In conclusion.
Recap of Thesis/Main Points: Museums must modernize to take their place in the 21st century. The modern patron wants a more personalized access to the collection, to remain engaged while being provided an education and the data collected helps the museum understand what patrons enjoy.
[Based on your notes above, write the conclusion for your speech using complete sentences.]
In conclusion, Museums must modernize to take their place in the 21st century. The modern patron wants a more personalized access to the collection, to remain engaged while being provided an education and the data collected helps the museum understand what patrons enjoy. Of the many challenges – organizational, financial, and cultural—that art museums must address in order to prosper in the future, realizing the full potential of working in a digital mode is without doubt the most important (Rub, 2016). The modern museum is embracing the 21st century with interactive displays and personalized experiences. While providing a complete access to anyone no matter their disability and providing a complete experience of their collection. These upgrades and updates are helping museums by reducing display space, increasing patron accessibility, and providing a deeper incite into the experience of the patron. All this increases patron enjoyment and attendance while improving the museum itself.
