Planning

Speech Topic: Modernizing of museums for the 21st Century.

General Purpose Statement (to inform, persuade, or entertain): To persuade museum personnel to modernize and the benefits of bringing their museums into the 21st century with a few examples.

Audience Information: Target audience is museum employees from the top down.

Audience Considerations: [List a few important social, cultural, and ethical considerations you will need to keep in mind when addressing your audience.] Explain technology, older members might need help understanding technology, list benefits in an understandable format.

Introduction

Attention Getter: Modernizing is a necessity.

Statement of Credibility: Critical and financial successes of recent models such as the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Art Lens project, the Renwick Gallery’s blockbuster Wonder exhibition and the Cooper Hewitt Pen all illustrate a growing trend towards interactive, immersive technologies as a way to capture visitor attention and remain relevant in the digital age (Saha, 2016).

Relevance Statement: Of the many challenges – organizational, financial, and cultural—that art museums must address in order to prosper in the future, realizing the full potential of working in a digital mode is without doubt the most important (Rub, 2016).

Thesis Statement: The modernization to the 21st century museum will provide multiple benefit like improved attendance, increasing organization, and data collecting.

[Based on your notes above, write the introduction for your speech using complete sentences.]

Modernizing is a necessity, and this presentation are some ways that it will improve museums. Let me start with a personal experience, before covid I went to my favorite museum. That museum was the War Memorial Museum in Muskogee, home of the USS. Batfish, a WW2 Balao class submarine. Even this small-town museum understood that modernizing is necessary. There were videos on the submarine that showed how the machinery worked. This is just one example how museums are entering the 21st century and providing deeper entertainment for their patrons. Of the many challenges – organizational, financial, and cultural—that art museums must address in order to prosper in the future, realizing the full potential of working in a digital mode is without doubt the most important (Rub, 2016). Many museums are already modernizing, and this type of expansion is proving to be successful. Critical and financial successes of recent models such as the Cleveland Museum of Art’s Art Lens project, the Renwick Gallery’s blockbuster Wonder exhibition and the Cooper Hewitt Pen all illustrate a growing trend towards interactive, immersive technologies as a way to capture visitor attention and remain relevant in the digital age (Saha, 2016). The modernization to the 21st century museum will provide multiple benefit like improved attendance, organization, and data collecting. Something to remember is “Ideas about what role museums must play in society, and the value they have, frequently change (Pickering, 2020).

Body

Write the body of your speech. Make sure to support all points and sub points with evidence, explanations, and citations and use complete sentences.

Main Point One: Increasing attendance is the focus of modernization. These tools provide the patron with a new experience and gives them the ability to share that experience with others. Many museums are trying these tools in new exhibitions. The goal of the exhibition was to encourage visitors to look up at the art. According to the museum, 39% of visitors looked again at the images after using the app (ReBlink), and 84% reported “feeling engaged with the art.” (Coates, 2019).

Sub-point: ReBlink, an augmented reality app that allowed users to view the museum’s collection overlaid with three-dimensional images and videos (Coates, 2019). These 3-D images provide a completely new experience and allows personal interaction when using the app. Another way museums are increasing patronage is by providing a virtual reality experience. These VR setups allow the user to view artwork and sculptures in 3-D. Contrary to fears that visitors would be absorbed in their own experience, the museum found that audiences were sharing screens in groups and discussing their experiences together, even between strangers (Coates, 2019).

Sub-point: Another tool used is a telepresence devise called The Beam and it allows one on one guided tours (Nolan, 2016). The Beam is the height of the average person, it is monitor on wheels with a camera and a microphone. The Beam allows patrons who are unable to walk enjoy the museum with this devise. These advances remove the limits facing some people and allow them to fully enjoy the museum. Less restrictions means more people through the door. Creating opportunities for guests with low-vision or blindness patrons to touch original objects or 3D printed copies of works in the collection is a time-tested approach to making art accessible to everyone (Long, 2018). These advances increase attendance by providing a new experience and opening the museum to people who normally would not be able to enjoy it.

Transition: Increased attendance leads to my next point of organization.

Main Point Two: The tools of modernization allow the museum to preserve its collection while providing access to it digitally. The patrons can access the complete collection digitally which provides the full museum experience while preserving the collection.

Sub-point: Many museums have made efforts to create publicly accessible digital archives with high resolution images and details for the objects in the collection (Saha, 2019). By digitalizing their collection, it provides the patron access to all of it while allowing the museum flexibility in its displays. This allows the museum to have a better control of its space while providing a full experience of their complete collection and the ability to share some interesting details.

Sub-point: Modernizing of the collection allows delicate items to remain in storage. Artwork and other priceless artifacts from the collections can remain in storage while still being able to be viewed digitally. This allows the museum to preserve the collection for future generations while allowing the patron complete access to all the museum’s collection. This saves the museum money on restoration and preservation while providing access to all their collection.

Transition: The benefit of all this technology means understanding the patron.

Main Point Three: Modernization allows for better data gathering. This data creates a better understanding at what engages a patron’s attention. This data provides an understanding of what changes will increase attendance and improve the museum itself.

Sub-point: The data collected tells the museum how the patrons spent their time in the museum. By using digital tools with features such as tracking beacons and social sharing, museums can measure visitor behavior and interests to quantify engagement (Saha,2019). These basically track the movement of patrons through the museum and show the staff what has the patron’s attention. The data provided is an invaluable tool to the museum by giving them insight into the patron’s experience throughout the museum.

Sub-point: The data provides an understanding of the personal experience of the patron. This allows the museum to precisely define what it means by audience engagement and use this data to inform its programming and exhibition strategy to draw audiences to the institution (Saha, 2019). The museum can use this data to improve its displays and increase enjoyment and attendance. This allows the museum to gather information on what the patron is enjoying and what parts of the museum needs to be improved.

Conclusion

Statement of Closure: In conclusion.

Recap of Thesis/Main Points: Improving attendance is the lifeblood of any museum. These new technologies provide the ability to know what the patron is interested in by collecting data. That data gives the museums plenty of ideas for organization and the ability to see the museum through the patrons’ eyes

[Based on your notes above, write the conclusion for your speech using complete sentences.]

In conclusion, the modern museum that embraces the 21st century technology will prosper. Improved attendance is the lifeblood of any museum. These new technologies provide the ability to know what the patron is interested in by collecting data. That data gives the museums plenty of ideas for organization and the ability to see the museum through the patrons’ eyes. ReBlink, The Beam, and VR experiences are just a few examples of how museums are improving themselves and creating an inviting experience for the modern patron. Even small-town museums are understanding the value of improving their museums by going digital. At the end of the day the world is a different place now and these experiences are becoming a necessity to survive and increase patronage. Museums must change to meet the needs of the new generations and the new generation is the digital generation of the 21st century. The sky is the limit with this new technology and we never know what the future may hold in the advancements provided by it.
