Jolly: M y First Dog

When I was growing up, we always had pets; we had dogs, cats, birds, fish, etc. I

remember Lucky, the cat that we found in the cold near my grandmother’s house, and Cassie, the

homeless dog. We also adopted “pedigree” animals throughout the years. Rocky, the Eskimo

Spitz, was a gorgeous, white-haired dog, and we had numerous Dachshunds as well: Oscar, Sam,

and T ipper, to name a few. When I moved out on my own, I became almost a total cat person,

and I have taken care of Puff, Iris, and (currently) Alis over the past ten years. However, my

inclination towards cats changed last fall, when I adopted Jolly, the first dog that I have cared for

all by myself. Because of the way that I met him, what he does for me, and because of the

purposes that he will serve in the future, Jolly has quickly become my new best friend.

I met Jolly on October 24, 2016. For a couple of weeks prior, I had noticed a cute little

brown dog running around outside of the condos where I live. I assumed that he was homeless

because he was not on a leash, which is required where I live. However, I was never close

enough to him to verify my assumptions until the aforementioned date. On October 24, I drove

home, parked my Honda Pilot, got out of the vehicle, and there he was, sitting in the parking lot

and looking up at me with big, brown eyes. I fed him immediately, and that weekend, I took him

to the vet, where he got his necessary shots and the like, and I also took him to Petsmart for

supplies. After that, he was all mine.

Commented [GC1]: Your last name and page number go in

the header (In most versions of Word, click on Insert and then Header or Page Number for options.)

Commented [GC2]: Notice how all of my lines are double-

spaced.

Commented [GC3]: Your title should be centered, but

everything else is aligned at left. You do not need quotation marks around your title, nor do you need a period. Your title should only be a few key words, capitalized correctly.

Commented [GC4]: IMPORTANT! This essay is designed to

demonstrate organization only. We will learn how to incorporate sources and documentation later in the course.

Commented [GC5]: This is an example of a thesis statement

with three parts.

Commented [GC6]: This topic sentence follows the FIRST

idea presented in my thesis statement.

Jolly does many things for me that I find so endearing. I am not a morning person, so

Jolly politely lets me sleep as late as I want to. He will lie beside me until I wake up. T hen

when I tell him good morning, he gives me lots of sweet kisses, which makes me smile. He also

greets me when I come home from work and behaves as if I am his absolute favorite person on

Earth! He wags his tail and jumps in my lap, which is so cute. He also sits beside me on the

couch when I am watching TV, and we snuggle together at night before falling asleep.

Furthermore, I appreciate Jolly for what he will continue to do for me. Dogs are constant

companions, and I am certain that he will keep me company through the years. I will also use

him as a watch dog in the future. T hough he does not bark very often, he certainly bellows when

someone approaches my condo or starts climbing the stairs of my porch. I also go for walks with

him frequently, and even though he is a small animal, he serves as a deterrent for evil-doers.

After all, who wants to attack someone who has a loud dog beside her?

Because of the way that I met him, what he does for me, and what he will continue to do

for me, Jolly has become a tremendous blessing. Granted, I still adore my cat. Alis and I are

still very loving with each other, and I hope to have her for many years. However, Jolly has

added additional blessings in my life, and I am so thankful that I met and adopted him. I think

even Alis is beginning to appreciate him, which says a lot about Jolly, since a dog is typically a

cat’s number one nemesis. She probably feels the same way that I do: who could resist Jolly’s

loving personality, his adorable brown eyes, and all of those sweet kisses?

entire essay but is hopefully stated in a slightly different way than before.
