Podcast Adoption
With the emergence of technology, the school has decided to adopt the use of podcasts in the school to facilitate student learning. The expansion of learning techniques to the use of podcasts gives an opportunity for reflection and independent learning for the students. This decision has been initiated by a team of teachers from every department, and introducing the technology means that the parents, teachers, administration and students will have to work hard to facilitate the initiative.
The school made this decision after the emergence of the Covid -19 pandemic, with most students needing podcasts for short and single concept lectures while providing audio feedback to the students when studying at home. This decision to implement podcasts was made after surveying the students about if they preferred the use of podcasts, and the preference was overwhelmingly popular. The podcast will be a form of m-learning where a devices are used to listen to a broadcast or video.
Following the overwhelming support from the students, the teachers will evaluate on development of podcasts beginning next week. The teachers will be informed through teachers' meetings and follow-ups through email facilitated by the school principal. From there, the school IT teachers will start recording and posting on the school website, and the first podcast will be ready within a two weeks, with the launch date being August 22, 2022.
The role of teachers is to plan, record, edit and publish. In a study conducted by Nielsen Franklin's survey data in 2016, thirteen million homes as rated as podcast fans, with the number increasing to sixteen million by 2017 (Jones, 2019). The subject teacher will be required to select a topic they need to commit to or what they are passionate about and create a podcast name with a description of the show. The teacher will plan the first eight weeks of content, covering every topic. On the recording of the first episode, the teacher will record for about 15 minutes followed by editing and publishing (TeacherVision, 2020). The podcast will be hosted on the Libsyn website.
The school management will be needed to assist the teachers financially to purchase high quality headphones and facilitate the release of the podcasts in audio or visual form. The parents will be informed through emails for them to be active participants. Azubuike & Aina (2020) state that the parent's role included shaping the student's perception of podcast learning and purchasing a mobile phone or laptop to facilitate the program at home.
The students will be informed on the assembly and school website regarding the introduction of the podcast next week. The students would be needed to work in groups to prepare a list of questions before listening to the episodes one week before the teacher prepares them (Honeycutt,2022). The student would be needed to post three comments they find provocative, important, and interesting. The students must recommend a podcast or specific episode related to the course material.
For more information on the podcast, the teachers, parents, administrators, and students should visit the school website or ask the Head IT teacher in person or through school email.
