Peer/Mentor involvement with learning

Parents talk to their kids and try to give them advice on things throughout life, this is customary. What is also customary is the fact that kids choose not to listen to mom and dad nine times out of ten. This situation, I think, is true no matter what the socio-economic standing demographic data, and geographic location is for a student. This proposal is targeting specifically rural schools in mostly homogenized population areas. The school would follow somewhat of the Montessori method of education. Where it would have a system of education for older students to seeks to develop natural interests and activities through mentorship rather than use formal teaching methods. The school would be called Westinghouse Career Academy and Mentorship program. It would be a Chicago Public School, located in Chicago, Illinois. This school would be close to 100% black African American and the students are majority lower class on a socio-economic scale. The proposal is for the Upper classmen at Westinghouse to travel twice a month to other local elementary in their community and teach/mentor younger students in math, English, and science.

The target schools for this program are schools with higher dropout rates and lower socio-economic standing. In this area the westside of Chicago, it would be difficult to find a variance in population as far as race, nationality, and religion. The goal of this program is for upperclassman high school seniors and juniors that are in higher level classes to travel twice a month to the target schools and help mentor and teach the seventh and eighth graders. This program would also have high achieving Sophomores and Freshman’s at the leader school travel to mentor fifth and sixth graders at the mentor school in the same fashion.

The diversity mentor program that I am proposing will not only introduce students to other students from different socio-economic and location backgrounds it will also have a positive influence on both schools. The mentor school will see an increase in retention rate and also a rise in their graduation rate. While to leader school will receive experiential learning.
