1. This is PreAp Chemistry teacher John Hustead. The beginning of the lesson shows the students working on 'bell work'. Why or why not is "bell work" important?

As you begin to watch the video, reflect on why Mr. Hustead has the students complete a 'bell work' activity and how Mr. Hustead holds the students accountable for the 'bell work'.

2. Note that Mr. Hustead is 'cold calling' on students to answer his questions. Why is he doing this? Reflect.

This means that students know that at any given moment, the students need to be prepared to answer a question. He is holding them accountable for being prepared. You heard one student say he had trouble with the question. Mr. Hustead respectively reminded him that he had his notes from yesterday there by giving him a hint to look at his notes. Mr. Hustead did not scold or embarrass the student. He instead helped him by reminding him to use his notes to help him answer the question. Ultimately, the student answered the question. That is the goal.

3. Why is Mr. Hustead collecting the 'bell work'? Reflect.

Reflect: What is the climate of the classroom? What is the relationship like between teacher and students? How did the teacher build this relationship?

4. What do you see written on the boards? Why is this helpful to the students?

5. Notice that Mr. Hustead used all necessary safety precautions during the experiment. What did he do? Why did he alone do the experiment?

Your school district will have very specific safety protocols for you to use in the science labs. Please make sure you ask about this once you are hired. You will also be responsible to train all students in safety protocols.

6. Reflect: Why did Mr. Hustead give the students a script?

7. Note how Mr. Hustead has referred to the Advanced Placement (AP) exam twice. These students are in a PreAP class. Mr. Hustead is already preparing the students for the more challenging AP course. He is explaining tasks the students will have to be able to do on the AP exam. He has educated himself on what is expected of students in the next level course and wants them to be successful. No doubt the students appreciate his efforts. Why is this important?

8. Reflect: What phase of the lesson is Mr. Husted transitioning to? Why is he asking the students to be prepared to present their findings to the class?

9. Effective teachers always reflect on the lesson, and lesson outcomes. Listen as the teacher reflects on this lesson, and compare it to the responses you have written on the observation worksheet. Use both the teacher’s reflections and your own observation when writing your overall observational reflection.
