Some major job responsibilities per Carter McNamara’s article Roles and Responsibilities of Chief Executive Officer of a Corporation”:

Leader

· Advises the Board

· Advocates/promotes organization and stakeholder change related to organization mission

· Motivates employees in organization, products/programs, and operations

Manager

· Overseas operations of organization

· Implements plans

· Manages human resources of organization

· Manages financial and physical resources

Visionary / Information Bearer

· Ensures staff and Board have sufficient and up-to-date information

· Looks to the future for change opportunities

· Interfaces between Board and employees

· Interfaces between organization and community

Decision Maker

· Formulates policies and planning recommendations to the Board

· Decides or guides courses of action in operations by staff

Board Developer

· Assists in the selection and evaluation of board members

· Makes recommendations, supports Board during orientation and self-evaluation

· Supports Board's evaluation of Chief Executive

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS. List Essential Functions (or Essential Duties and Responsibilities) and describe each carefully, but without excessive detail. 1. Board Administration and Support

Supports operations and administration of Board by advising and informing Board members, interfacing between Board and staff, and supporting Board's evaluation of chief executive (McNamara).

2. Program, Product and Service Delivery

Oversees design, marketing, promotion, delivery and quality of programs, products, and services (McNamara).

3. Financial, Tax, Risk and Facilities Management

Recommends yearly budget for Board approval and prudently manages organization's resources within those budget guidelines according to current laws and regulations (McNamara).

4. Human Resource Management

Effectively manages the human resources of the organization according to authorized personnel policies and procedures that fully conform to current laws and regulations (McNamara).

5. Community and Public Relations

Assures the organization and its mission, programs, products, and services are consistently presented in strong, positive image to relevant stakeholders (McNamara).

6. Fundraising

Oversees fundraising planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources, establishing strategies to approach funders, submitting proposals and administrating fundraising records and documentation (McNamara).

III. EVALUATION FACTORS

SKILL- Describe nature and extent of knowledge required to perform acceptable work. Include Education and Applied Experience.

This positions requires one to have a bachelor’s degree or a master’s degree in a subject that is relevant to the industry of practice (i.e. electrical engineering and computer science), or an MBA. Must have managerial experience and corporate governance experience. Also, expected to have the ability to understand personnel and human resources management (Reda, Reifler, & Thatcher, 2008).

· Identify the three most important learned job skills required to perform acceptable work in this position. (Exclude personality traits.)

1. Resilience – The CEO needs to keep the company on track to reach a certain goal. He/she must remind the company not to quit and motivate the company to believe that they can bounce back from any dilemma.

2. The ability to see past the obstacles – a critical skill for a CEO is to be able to see past the obstacles and be able to imagine the finished product.

3. Empathy – a leader must show empathy while still being a strong leader and remember the vision set out for the company.

· Identify specific goals and objectives of the position.

For this exact position, which is currently held by Jeff Bezo, here are some sample goals to set as a chief executive officer (CEO):

· Achieve 25% net surplus

· Create a 5-year financial plan

· Run operational excellence

· Improve your strategy for service deliverance (Trammell, 2019).
