My sister Anabel works for ABC Company as a mechanical engineer. The company manufactures beverages and soft drinks. I will conduct an analysis of her job in part 1 of this paper and a job description in part 2. I will take note of all her responses and record them.

PART 1

Questions and their Feedback

1. Kindly describe the tasks you perform

It’s my duty to ensure that I oversee the installation of all machinery and equipment in the company. Machinery and equipment needs to be installed with care and correctly to prevent and reduce accidents. Similarly, it’s my duty to plan and evaluate the tools and equipment to be used. I have to oversee their daily operation, maintenance, and repair.

2. How many employees do you supervise?

I supervise five machine operators and two technicians.

3. What level of education and certificates does one need for your position?

Well, I own a degree in mechanical engineering which is the minimal requirement for the job. However, any additional certificates such as masters and diplomas are an advantage.

4. How would you describe the conditions you work under?

The company ensures a high level of safety for its workers. In my case, am provided with the right equipment for my job. The equipment includes, standard foot ware, overalls and a headgear. I am supposed to arrive at work by eight in the morning and leave at five past noon during work days. The firm purchases standard machinery hence minimal accidents during work. In addition, workers are not overloaded since the working hours are standard and they receive breaks in between. I receive a monthly salary and any overtime is compensated too.

5. What machines are used in the company?

The company’s machines and equipment include refrigerators, conveyor belts, air conditioners, electric generators, gas turbines, and manufacturing machines which I oversee their operations. Similarly, I have to check the elevators and escalators and ensure that they are in good conditions.

6. What experience does one need to work in your position?

The minimum experience is three years in a well know organization. However, any additional years is an added advantage over fellow candidates.

7. Are you allowed to make any decisions in the firm?

Yes. After conducting an inspection, I have to make recommendations on any necessary changes. I also decide on the equipment to be purchased to aid with the production process.

8. Describe the supervision you give to other employees.

As outline in my responsibilities, I have to supervise the plant operators and ensure effective flow of production. I interact with the other employees and offer assistant where needed. Additionally, I have to observe them as they work and ensure they follow and observe the right processes to prevent accidents.

9. Are you fairly compensated for your work?

Yes. The salary that I receive is quite motivating and the firm also compensates its employees for any overtime. In addition, the company provides transport for any willing employees thus helping in reducing monthly expenses. The firm also provides are medical cover for its works.

10. How is the communication in company ABC?

The communication is effective both downwards and upwards. Any important information is communicated via mails and memos. However, employee’s suggestions are considered and we air them through the suggestion box.

11. Describe the skills required in your line of work.

Some of the skills include effective technical skills, creativity, both verbal and written communication skills. Similarly, one has to be creative and quick in decision making, be able to solve problems, and work as a team.

12. How can you describe the supervision you get from your supervisors if any?

I do not receive any supervision. I conduct inspections and submit the reports to the managers.

13. Is there any training needed for the job?

Yes. One needs to undergo a training which is offered by the company after recruitment.

A mechanical engineer oversees the installation of equipment in the organization. He/she will also conduct regular inspections on the machinery as well as supervise plant operators to ensure smooth operations. They will also report any issues to the authorities and make suggestions.

The Hackman and Oldham’s job characteristics model explains on how an employee’s responsibilities affect their motivation at work. Different people are motivated by various aspects such as salary, allowances, and job satisfaction. However, the Hackman and Oldham’s job characteristics model believes that the employee’s task play a key role in their motivation. Some of the characteristics are:

Task identity

Employees should be made aware of their responsibilities and duties. They should also know when their tasks have been completed. This will help them gain satisfaction once they complete their duties.

Skill variety

Performing different tasks reduces monotony. Employees will be required to do tasks that require different skills. They will also be allowed to benchmark in other organizations for new skills. Thus, they will develop growth in the different fields as well as gain satisfaction.

Autonomy

Do the employees have freedom at work? Applicants will be given the freedom to conduct inspections and provide reports. Additionally, the mechanical engineers will make decisions and suggestions hence gaining motivation at work.
