Introduction
As much as people may disagree with me, I believe that the teaching profession is one of the
noblest jobs that anyone can pursue. It involves shaping the lives of little ones by impacting
knowledge that will guide them in their day to day lives. This is one of the motivating factors
that have made me desire to become an English instructor once I graduate. I am more than
committed to achieve a lot in this area even though people have already discouraged me that I
cannot make it. To be a teacher, there are many requirements that one has to fulfill before they
can qualify to teach and this is because the teaching profession has been in existence since the
beginning of time and as a result there is a lot that pertains to it;
Tasks
As mentioned earlier on, the teaching profession is one that has been in existence for quite a long
time. This explains why with time, teachers’ duties have escalated from just going to class to a
lot more in connecting with and socializing a child. Some of the duties of a teacher include;
Planning, preparing and delivering lessons- This is one of the core duties of a teacher.
Normally, there is a syllabus in all subjects taught which has to be followed throughout the
course. It is the duty of the English teacher to first of all plan on how they will go about the
coverage of the syllabus. Once they have assigned all parts of the syllabus time, they need to
prepare. This will involve going back to the books and other sources so as to understand and gain

more knowledge on the topic being taught. Going to class without having prepared can be quite
frustrating especially if the students ask you a question that you cannot answer (Harmer, 2008).
Finally, a teacher has to go to class to teach(delivery)
Working with the students towards improving their speaking, listening, reading and
writing skills. It is from languages that learners are able to learn the above mentioned skills and
so a teacher in the English language needs to help her students in the above areas
Running and coming up with specialist courses. This are for those students who may
have a problem and need extra help or for those who want to further their studies in English
Giving and assessing the students’ work. The students have to be given assignments that
will help them practice the English skills that they have learnt in their lessons. Once they have
done the work, the teacher should go through their assignments so as to see what they have learnt
and what still needs to be worked on.
Tools and Technology
Living in the 21st century has come with its own benefits especially in the usage of machines in
our teaching and learning activities. Development has given a teacher many tools that they can
use in their day to day activities namely;
Film and video- This technology can be used in the practice of skills like pronunciation
and learning of new vocabulary (Harmer, 2007). The process is aided by the fact that the videos
will provide a visual learning tool that is quite effective
Apps- Nowadays teachers can help in the creation of English apps that the students can
use to study English in a fun manner. The app gives them a chance to practice grammar rules but

also keeps track of the progress that they make. It is quite convenient for the learner since they
can study at any time without needing the presence of a teacher
Books, both manual books and electronic books are also a great toll that an English
teacher cannot work without

The knowledge compartments one needs to have include;
Semantics
Pragmatics
Morphology
Syntax
Skills and abilities
A good teacher is one who has undergone training and acquired variety of skills that are needed
to survive and adequately deliver. Some of the skills that an English teacher has to possess
include;
Clear diction- Since they are teaching people on how to use language, they have to be clear in the
way they express and use words
Good spoken and written language skills
Confidence in the way they approach the subject matter
Patience- teaching languages can be tough at times depending on the type of students that one
has. A teacher needs to be patient with his learners

Educational requirements
A bachelor’s degree in language, linguistics or in education
Experience-To be employed by the state, one needs to have had some sort of experience of more
about two years
