KWANTLEN POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY CNPS 3310 A10: THEORIES OF COUNSELLING
2022 Fall Semester Assignment: Case Study Analysis and Treatment Plan Case Study Analysis: 30% Treatment Plan: 10% Due Date: Friday, November 25, 11:59pm. Option A Dr Samara Joe Surrey Memorial Hospital Dear Dr Bain As mentioned when we spoke earlier today, my colleagues and I would like your professional opinion on a most fascinating case. The client, “Edward S”, was discovered several months ago alone in a house at the top of a hill that was redeveloped for condos and has since been relocated to a group home in the Metro Vancouver area. Despite some rather unique physical challenges, Edward has many talents and is adjusting well to his new surroundings. However, he suffers from that all too common and debilitating psychological malady – social anxiety. We are concerned that his anxiety will stop him from reaching his true potential and consequently we would appreciate your perspective on how Edward’s problems developed and how he can be treated. In order to familiarize yourself with Edward’s case, we suggest you watch the film file of his earlier days: Edward Scissorhands (1990; director – Tim Burton, starring – Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder). It details all we know about Edward prior to his discovery. We are requesting a report analyzing Edward’s case and providing a detailed treatment plan from one of the following 3 perspectives: 1. Psychoanalysis (Freud), OR 2. Cognitive-behavioural (Beck/Ellis), OR 3. Existential (Yalom). Whatever approach you use, please provide me with the following with respect to Edward’s case:
a. Analysis: A brief overview of theory (a few general sentences) followed by a cohesive and rich theoretical explanation regarding the origin of Edward’s problems from your selected perspective supported by evidence from the case (approx. 1250-1500 words),
b. A treatment plan/explanation of what counselling would look like from this perspective with Edward (eg goals, process, strategies if applicable, expected outcome, expected difficulties in treatment) (approx. 250-500 words).
Also, we warn you, Edward has had some rather bawdy, suggestive experiences at times that may be offensive to you (or your family if you intend to view it with them). If this is of concern, let us know immediately. We have other more G-rated cases that we could also use a consult on. Thank you for your attention to this case. Yours sincerely Dr Samara Joe
