Police Violence against African American Youth in Taxes

Police Violence against African American Youth in Taxes

Article # 1: Fort Worth Police Have More Violence to Answer For, Residents Say:

This article is about a case happened with a black woman and eventually highlighted many other cases that demonstrate the violence on the black people by the police officers. "There was Henry Newson, a black man who had just been discharged from the hospital and was waiting for a ride home when two officers working security questioned why he was there. He refused to leave, and a white officer punched him in the face" (Fernandez, Mervosh & Bogel-Burroughs, 2019). This quote demonstrates the actual situation of the relationship that black people and the police share with each other. If we focus on this incident, then we can conclude that black people are even not safe walking on the streets and the miserable thing is that the ultimate security or protection force is their enemy. In this article, there is mentioned that "There was Craigory Adams, also black, who knocked on his neighbor’s door late one night carrying a barbecue fork, to keep stray dogs away, he said, and the neighbor called the police. A white officer pointed a shotgun at Mr. Adams but said he wasn’t meaning to fire it, he did, striking Mr. Adams in the arm” (Fernandez, Mervosh & Bogel-Burroughs, 2019). This quote shows that even small or minor mistakes of black people can bring their death in seconds just because of trust issues between them and the police of this country.

This article highlighted many similar cases that clarify the current situation of the black people in this country and the relationship they share with the police force. there is a statement mentioned in this article that "In the largely black and Hispanic neighborhood in southeast Fort Worth where Ms. Jefferson lived, and in others nearby, many residents recalled times when they had tried calling the police — and ended up sorry that they did, all been brought up again in the days since Ms. Jefferson, a 28-year-old black woman, was shot and killed in her bedroom this month by a white police officer who was standing outside her window" (Fernandez, Mervosh & Bogel-Burroughs, 2019). In this article, there is also mentioned that “This is not an isolated incident,” said the Rev. Kyev Tatum, who is part of a coalition asking the Justice Department to investigate “over-aggressive policing” in Fort Worth’s communities of color. “This is historic and it is systemic, and we understand that racism is at the heart of this” (Fernandez, Mervosh & Bogel-Burroughs, 2019). This quote from the article shows that this is easy to conclude that all events and incidents are because of racism and hatred for the black people in the heart of the police force.

Another case in this article shows the situation of the black people in this country, no police and law and order can protect them not even give them their basic right of protection from the police forces. It is mentioned that "In Dallas, just 30 miles east of Fort Worth, a similar case played out tragically over the past year: A white off-duty police officer was sentenced to 10 years in prison earlier this month after she mistakenly entered the apartment of a black neighbor, Botham Shem Jean, and shot him to death while he was watching television" (Fernandez, Mervosh & Bogel-Burroughs, 2019). In the end, to highlight the sentiments and thinking of the higher authorities on this matter a quote is mentioned which said that “In an interview, Mayor Price said she had heard from some black residents who said they feared the police so much that they would no longer call them for help. She was deeply worried by that sentiment. But she flatly rejected the idea that the city’s white leadership was not engaged with black residents" (Fernandez, Mervosh & Bogel-Burroughs, 2019).

Article # 2: US: White Ex-Officer Gets 12 Years in Shooting of Naked Black Man

This article focuses on one case of Anthony Hill, who was shot dead by Robert Olsen and later diagnosed with bipolar disorder and PTSD, in the year of 2015. This is another case that highlights the situation of black people in this country. Police do not bother to wait for a second and listen and observe situations where mostly black people are involved and take action even start shooting without thinking once. A quote from the article that "A former police officer in the US state of Georgia who was convicted of aggravated assault and other crimes in the fatal shooting of an unarmed, naked man was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison"  ("US: White ex-officer gets 12 years in shooting of naked black man", 2019). This quote explained the case and the violent act of a police officer on an innocent man who was suffering from a mental illness. He did not wait for a second and listen to the victim or observed the situation.

In this article, it is mentioned that "A badge, a uniform, a gun are not a license to shoot and kill with impunity, the lawyer said. Defense lawyer Amanda Clark Palmer said in an email after the hearing that while the sentence was higher than they wanted, 'we cannot say it is an unfair sentence, and we appreciate [the judge's] thoughtfulness'" ("US: White ex-officer gets 12 years in shooting of naked black man", 2019).

The current ration and cases explained the unbearable incidents that happened with the black people. Where should they go and ask for the fair and equal culture, rights, and position in this society? Another statement mentioned in this article explains that "Olsen exited his car and yelled, "Stop! Stop!" Hill did not stop and Olsen shot him twice, witnesses said. Prosecutors told jurors Olsen unreasonably and unnecessarily used deadly force to deal with the unarmed, naked man who was suffering a mental health crisis. Defense attorneys argued Olsen had limited information about the situation, was scared to death, had only seconds to make a tough decision, and acted in self-defense" ("US: White ex-officer gets 12 years in shooting of naked black man", 2019). This type of case leads us to think that can racism be finished from this society ever or not?

Article # 3: Video Shows Unarmed Texas Man with Pants down Before Fatal Police Shooting

This article also focuses on the case of a black man who was shot dead on the street by the police officer without knowing why he is there, what is his problem, is he suffering from a mental illness, or maybe he needs help. Despite all these factor police officers murdered a black man who is standing with his pants down. There is a quote mentioned in this article that explains the case overview. "Deputy Brewer had exited his car, confronted a man in the street whose pants were around his ankles, and fatally shot him once in the chest. It is the latest example of an officer killing an unarmed black person" (Haag, 2018).

Another explanation of this case can be observed in this quote from the article. "In the video, Deputy Brewer, who is black, stops his car in the video, Deputy Brewer, who is black, stops his car behind two men having an altercation, with shoving, in the street. The deputy can be heard yelling at Danny Ray Thomas, the man whose pants were down, as he walks toward the car. ‘Get down, man! Get on the ground,’ the deputy screams repeatedly, before, out of the camera’s view, a single gunshot rings out. Mr. Thomas, 34, was pronounced dead at a hospital" (Haag, 2018). There are many things and observations that can tell that a police officer can respond in any other way but he chose to shot him at a moment without knowing why he is there, what is his problem is he suffering from a mental illness, or maybe he needs help. As it is mentioned in the article that "Sheriff Gonzalez said that Deputy Brewer was equipped with a Taser, which he did not use, the sheriff said that deputies had been trained on the use of nonlethal force, including during encounters with people who may have a mental illness" (Haag, 2018).

Article # 4: US: White Officer Charged With Murder in Shooting of Black Woman

This article also focuses on the case of a black woman who was murdered by a white police officer in her own house. the quote from this article explains the full case as it is mentioned that "A white police officer who shot and killed an African American woman in her Fort Worth, Texas, home in the presence of her eight-year-old nephew was charged with murder on Monday after resigning from the force" ("US: White officer charged with murder in the shooting of black woman", 2019). This is cleared that it is not a fact that those police officers would not get punishment, but the statistics are too depressive at the same time.

As per the Washington Fatal Force database Post, almost 689 individuals have been murdered by police officers in the United States in the year 2019. Almost 992 individuals were murdered by police officers in the year 2018 and further than 980 individuals were murdered by police officers the last year. The numbers are slowing down. it is also mentioned in this article that "According to the watchdog group The Sentencing Project, African American men are six times more likely to be arrested than white men" ("US: White officer charged with murder in the shooting of black woman", 2019). It can be observed that these all incidents are because of hatred ad racism in the country and the conflict among people the relationship of police officers and black people. as it is mentioned in this article that "These disparities, particularly the killing of African Americans by police, has prompted the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, a popular civil rights campaign aimed at ending police violence and dismantling structural racism" ("US: White officer charged with murder in the shooting of black woman", 2019).

Article # 5: Analysis: 20 Percent of People Shot By Texas Police Were Unarmed

This article is based upon the statistics and data that clarify our argument that police violence against African American Youth is growing dangerously in Taxes. it is mentioned in this article that shows the numbers and clarifies the position of the black people in texas, that "Texas police reported shooting 159 people in the first year that the state tracked such cases under a ground-breaking new law. Austin and Fort Worth each saw five of those shootings — compared with eight apiece in San Antonio and Dallas and 31 in Houston" (Moravec, 2018).

While that information cannot show us why those amounts have raised very drastically, this does warn us to the dilemma of rising deaths in police battles in Texas,” Woog said. “Without this evidence, the public discussion nearby individuals dying in police arrest, especially black people has been mostly anecdotal. It is mentioned in the article that "In 2015, Rep. Eric Johnson, an African-American Democrat from Dallas, was so troubled by the debate over disproportionate use of force against minorities that he championed a measure to gather more information regarding all officers who are involved in shootings, both non-fatal and fatal" (Moravec, 2018).
