INSTRUCTIONS FOR WRITING THE BOOK REVIEW
(Monday, September 16, 2019)
Instructions for writing your paper
Your book review should summarize the arguments of your chosen book and review the book favorably or unfavorably as the case may be. Your review should be written so that someone who has not read the book could understand what it’s about and what you think of it. You should give me your choice of book to review on a typed or handwritten note by next Monday, September 23.
The paper should be 1500-1700 words in length (not including the cover sheet and a list of references) with one-inch margins top and bottom, left and right. Large, clearly labeled diagrams may be used where appropriate. A list of references typed in a consistent format should be included at the end of the paper. (I don’t expect many references but you would likely refer to one or more other books or articles, perhaps those cited in the book that you review.)
Your full name, the number and name of the course, the date of submission, and the full name of the author, the full title of the book (including the subtitle), the edition, and the place of publication, the publisher, and the date of publication should also appear on the cover sheet. Don’t just provide the URL to a pdf of the book. And before you submit your review, write the word count on the cover sheet. (The word count should not include either what’s on the cover sheet or the list of references.)
A 1500-word paper without a cover sheet, diagrams, and a list of references would fill 5-6 pages depending on the spacing between paragraphs. Papers that are too short will lose points. Papers that exceed 1700 words had better be worth reading! And papers without cover sheets and a list of references will also lose points.
Your paper should be typed in Times New Roman 12-point font (and use italic, bold or underline sparingly), double-spaced (like this sentence), and paginated (go to Insert and click on Page Number).
Deadline for the paper
You may run a draft by me. Any draft that you wish to submit for my comments is due by 6 PM on Wednesday, October 9, to be returned by Wednesday, October 16.
The deadline for your paper is 6 PM on Monday, October 21. I won’t accept any draft or paper that is either emailed or faxed. And you will lose points if you are late in submitting your paper. This assignment counts for up to twenty points.
