JGR100: Finding Your Leadership Purpose
Discussion Question Week 2
Part 1: Self-Awareness
Top of Form
Self-awareness, which is sometimes also referred to as self-knowledge or introspection, is about understanding your own needs, desires, shortcomings, habits, and everything else that makes you tick. Simply put, it just means to be “aware” of the things that make you who you are. The more you know about yourself, the better you are at adapting life's changes. Essentially, the more you pay attention to your emotions and how you work, the better you'll understand why you do the things you do, your purpose.
In the article “What Self-Awareness Really Is (and How to Cultivate it)” author Tasha Eurich states that “Even though most people believe they are self-aware, only 10-15% of the people we studied actually fit the criteria.” How would you rate your level of self-awareness? Based on
the suggestions from the article, what are some ways that you can improve your self-awareness? Use content from the article to support your response.
Note: To receive full credit, remember also to write 2 posts in the discussion: one original and a response to another student.
Part 2: Respond to Student below
Hi Class and Dr. Jones,
How would you rate your level of self-awareness? Based on the suggestions from the article, what are some ways that you can improve your self-awareness? Use content from the article to support your response.
I rate my level of self-awareness as 20% out of 100%. After watching the TED talk, I realized that I ask a lot of why questions instead of what questions and find myself caught up in a rabbit hole of unanswered why questions. At the beginning of the video when she started calling out the traits of the self-aware unicorns, I thought to myself I am one of those unicorns, oh man was I wrong. When Tasha broke down the simple steps of being more self-aware, I realized that I was not as self-aware as I thought. I may have a lot the traits such as confidence, being a leader, and creativity. I realized that when I reflect regularly most of my question to myself “WHY” and not “WHAT”. I enjoyed listening to the video and reading the article about the 7 ways for a better self-reflection and introspection. I like the tip about writing down your vision so you will not only think about it but also have a constant reminder of your purpose. I am certain there are so many ways to help myself out, but I feel that those would be a great starting point.
Thanks,
Tasia
