EDL 821 MATRIX FOR THEMES & REFERENCES
Instructions: The purpose of this activity is to assist students in organizing and grouping similar references under one or more of the themes in order to synthesize the research. Insert five themes of your prospective dissertation/project topic in the boxes across the top of the matrix. Along the left side vertical columns insert the references (author & year) that you have selected thus far to use in your study. Then, if reference #1 contains data, information, or research that is related to themes 1 and 4, type a brief statement in the boxes that correspond to that reference. Using a matrix will help you organize and synthesize the research you find around your topic. The assignment asks for five themes and 10 references; however, it is recommended that you plug all your sources into the matrix to help you synthesize the research and “weed out” any references that do not align with the problem and purpose of your study.
