Part 1

Introduction

As an HCA employee, I am excited to have the opportunity to apply for the position of

Human Resource Coordinator. Since starting at HCA almost two years ago, I have tried my hardest

to excel in every position presented, from being Unit Clerk in the Imaging Department and my

current role as PPE Stewart. While I am grateful and happy in my current role, working as a Human

Resource Coordinator is more in line with my long-term goal, and I feel I would be an instant asset

to the team.

Working with customers over the years, I have been able to develop excellent

communication and coordination skills. I believe the most prominent abilities that I've acquired over

my years in the field are

• Attention to detail

• Strong work ethic

• Problem solving

Potential Questions/Responses

What made you consider HR as a profession?

Many years ago, I was able to work with a fantastic Human Resource Administrator; she

truly inspired me to study Business Administration. Being able to enter the field in a business

environment would help me advance professionally and give me the experience I need to succeed in

my future.

3

How many years of experience do you have in HR?

I have about a year of experience working in an HR environment. Although I haven't had a

role as an HR coordinator, I believe I possess the skills needed to support employees professionally,

such as critical thinking and attention to detail. I have also taken time to keep learning more about

HR skills required for this position by receiving certification in LinkedIn in:

• Human Resources Foundation

• Strategic Human Resources

• Diversity and Inclusion in a Global Enterprise

• Employee engagement

HCA is looking for someone who can support the HR Business Partner and VP. One of the things

you would be doing is coordinating employee recognition and service award events. Do you have

experience with this?

Yes, in my previous job, I coordinated events for the Board of Directors, employees, and

customers. I handled budget, venue, decor, food, and made sure awards were printed out or prizes

were ready.

An example of an event was working at PTOFCU; we handled a yearly community event.

Given the challenge of organizing this event, I had to coordinate entertainment, food, venue, kids’

activities, raffle, and prizes. I had to make sure I paid attention to small details to stay within the

COO budget. Working hand in hand with the HR Representative, we organized a successful event

bringing many new customers to the credit union.

"What are the primary skills you will bring to this position that sets you apart from other

applicants?" (1)

I believe the most vital skill I possess would be my communication and customer skill.

Being in HCA these past years, I have maintained excellent contact with our patients and staff.

Since working in the PPE room, I have developed a strong relationship with coworkers from

different departments and helped them with PPE inquiries. I have also been recognized by several

of my peers for going beyond the line of duty (Flavin, 2).

As an HR Coordinator, coworkers must know that you can be approachable with any inquiry. With

my communication skills, I would be able to listen attentively to their queries and find the best way

to resolve them promptly.

"Have you handled or led a team comprised of workers from different backgrounds? If you have,

can you share your experience?" (1)

In my previous job, I administrated a group of about ten people from different ethnicities

and backgrounds. When disputes arose, I was able to settle the dispute by putting into practice my

problem-solving skills.

Even though we all don't see eye to eye, we all bring something different to the team; this is why I

enjoy working with such a diverse group.

"Why should we hire you for this position instead of an outside applicant?" (1)

As you can see from my work performance, I always strive to do my best. Which

demonstrates the type of person I am and my work ethic. I don't run away from challenges; instead,

I face them and always try to overcome them by doing my best. Putting into practice our mission in

committing to care and improve human life has helped me developed a strong relationship with my

team members in this hospital. Since I have been here, I have demonstrated adaptability, critical

thinking, communication, and analytical skills. Having these skills would help me perform the

duties required for the position of Human Resources Coordinator.

Thank you so much for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Part 2

1. Channel and style.

I would use a blended channel with a formal tell/sell style.

a. Explain why you chose the specific channel you used for the written communication.

I decided to use a blended channel since the first interview is with a recruiter over the phone,

followed by a face-to-face interview (Hamilton, pg. 26, 3). Writing down my communication plan

has helped me feel more confident and prepared for the actual interview making sure I highlight the

skills that I possess that are linked to an HR Coordinator.

b. Explain what style you employed in your written communication (tell/sell, consult/join) and

why.

I used a tell/sell channel to express to my audience how I could be the right candidate for the

HR coordinator position.

2. Use feedback to refine your communication.

a. Describe or list the feedback you received on your written communication from the Week 7

discussion. Explain how you used the feedback to revise and improve your message.

6

The feedback I got from my peers and professor helped me developed a better outline for my

communication plan. Some of the thing mention where:

• Adding how I would be an asset to the team

• Behavioral scenarios from the skills I mention

• How I would make a difference

I was able to get the feedback and make possible questions/responses geared to an HR

Coordinator. I had always worried about not having a skill listed in the job posting, but Dr.

Summerskill mention LinkedIn can provide learning materials. I have taken advantage of this and

have researched and done a couple of HR courses and added the certification as a possible interview

response.
