Jean Kilbourne, whose documentary you'll be watching for this week's paper, argues that objectification of women in advertising contributes to a culture of violence that normalizes and desensitizes us to the degree to which violence occurs in real life.
Turning a human into an object is the first step to naturalizing physical abuse and other types of gender-based violence that includes rape, sexual assault, domestic/Intimate partner violence, and stalking.
TRIGGER WARNING: This documentary contains disturbing and sexually violent imagery. That being said, it's important to understand the role normalized images of violence play in advertising. Please see the syllabus and/or contact me directly if you have questions.
