INDIVIDUAL TOPIC SEARCH STRATEGY (ITSS) PAPER FORMAT
CLINICAL QUESTION
Research Question
Our research question is, “What are the nonpharmacological interventions to reduce cancer related symptoms in cancer patients?”
Purpose of Paper
This study aimed to determine the efficacy of a cool damp washcloth with peppermint essential oil versus a cool damp washcloth alone on the self-reported intensity of nausea in patients receiving chemotherapy in the outpatient ambulatory setting (Mapp et al., 2020). As a group we are collectively gathering information on what nonpharmacological instruments or techniques are used to be able to cope with their symptoms during their cancer treatments.
SEARCH STRATEGY
Search Terms
Once my group and I had come to the conclusion that we were going to choose our topic on nonpharmacological interventions for cancer patients I got excited. First of all, I am part of the Oncology Nursing Society and I get mailed out up to date research articles. After going through the journals, I was looking specifically for key words such as non-pharmacological, treatments. Somethings that would say, hot or cold therapy, music therapy something in specific.
Library Databases
After being able to look for my article, I wanted to search for it online to send the abstract to the professor. I was able to put the name into Pudmed and I found the abstract and submitted my paper.
Availability of Articles
Once you went ahead and said that we could find our articles to be approved, I quickly I started looking through, and I found about 150 articles that talked about my topic.
Refinement Decisions
Changed Decision
The decisions that have changed from my original search strategies is looking for articles that have happened within the last 5 years. I noticed in this situation, that I focused mainly on articles that dictated that they were a primary data article, and I also checked that they were full text. An article that would have all of these requirements but would also be enjoyable to read.
Rationale for Changed Decision
My original rationale for the decision to change from original search strategies, was because I needed an article that was relevant, information that was reviewed and taken from the author himself, and overall just research that was congruent to what I was researching about.
Availability of Articles
After going through the list of articles that aligned with our research question, I was finally able to narrow it down to 50 articles that spoke about nonpharmacological interventions to reduce cancer related symptoms in cancer patients.

Final Decision
Selection of Relevant Articles
My decision was based on the fact that my article studies the efficacy of peppermint oil in taking away the nausea in patients receiving chemotherapy. The paper itself was supposed to be written about a specific or maybe multiple nonpharmacological interventions to aid patients with cancer and their symptoms, and my article does just that.

This article aligns with this paper, because it specifically talks about hoe peppermint oil can help with the nausea that’s caused by the chemotherapy agents. The question of my paper emphasizes on how nonpharmacological interventions help with the chemotherapy and that right there
Study Type
This Study is a Quantitative study. In my study 79 patients receiving chemotherapy were chosen and separated into two groups, then they were asked to state their pain before the peppermint oil and after the oil. The group sample were given something and then studied the effects of it, making this study quantitative.
Level of Evidence: Evidence Level Pyramid
My study belongs to level two because it is a single randomized controlled trial.
SUMMARY
As I began my research journey for this paper, I searched through the journals I get delivered every month. I am part of the Oncology Nursing Society, and they send me monthly journals. I was able to search out of the 150 articles I had at hand. After I began to condense my list, I was able to separate to about 50 of these articles. I chose my article based on the requirements of the assignment. My research question was, “What are the nonpharmacological interventions to reduce cancer related symptoms in cancer patients?”, so based on this question, I made my decision to choose this article.
