Subject:              Developing early readers

Date:                  July 07, 2018

I worked in an elementary school library for eight years as the Library Aide. One of the things we took pride in was developing early readers. Early readers are those students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade, the grades for which students are struggling with learning to read. The smiles that were generated from each student improving in their reading ability was priceless. We attributed their success to the use of the Accelerated Reader program, its book finder feature and creating fun physical spaces to encourage reading in groups.  Anyone can use this process to inspire reading at home.

I will explain to you and offer advice on how you too can develop a love of reading with your own students using these tools:

· Accelerated Reader from Renaissance Learning.

· Creating a peaceful and organized space at home.

Using Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader from Renaissance is a free online site. The school paid for a subscription to the site. This allowed us to look up test information for each book we owned, as well as to test the students for their individual reading levels. It is helpful in improving your reader's levels by using the site to organize your library at home. The book finder feature is also free, it assists you in ensuring the books you already own are appropriate for your reader's age or reading level.  The website includes other features that can assist you with book selection such as:

· Reading level information

· Creating a list for use in the library

·

· Sorting by grade level, topic, fiction or nonfiction

·

· Recommends places to purchase titles

Creating a Space in your home

Encourage reading, by creating a space in your home for all your books. Add things to make it a relaxing and remove items which can be distractions.  Include a space for adults to read as well, as students seem to enjoy reading more when more than one person is doing it.

· Mark every book in your collection for easy identification.

· Purchase books in series to keep readers reading.

· Purchase large comfy pillows or bean bags for the reader to sit on while

· Be sure to have plenty of light, a nice window or some funky lighting works well.

· Remove distractions: no tv, electronics, or music allowed in the space.

· Join in on the fun. Readers enjoy reading in groups. Otherwise, its perceived as punishment.

Once you have established your system at home, sit back and enjoy the rewards. You will see your reader grow in their comprehension and enjoyment of reading, plus you will get to enjoy the peace that comes with everyone reading together.
