Toys ‘R’ Us is an American International toy, clothing and video game company founded by
Charles Lazarus in 194812. By 1990s, Toys ‘R’ Us rose from a $500 million company back in the 1970s to
a $12 billion company in 1990, selling over 18,000 toys in 1,450 locations world-wide and controlling 25
percent of the World’s toy market3.
According to Fox Business, in September 2017, after falling prey to several billions in debt and
tough competition from online retailers such as Amazon and Walmart, Toys ‘R’ Us filed for bankruptcy
and liquidated its business in March 2018.4
In June 2019, Toys ‘R’ Us announced a comeback and relaunch into an e-commerce site and a
new business strategy for its retail stores.5
In this case study, assume that Toys ‘R’ Us hired you as the new chief information officer (CIO) to
help relaunch the company into a global e-commerce multinational company.
