Social Networking

Part 1 Initial Post

Do you participate in social networking sites such as LinkedIn, My Space or Facebook or do you have a personal web site or blog? If yes, what is your experience?

Is there any content you definitely would or would not post on such a page?

If you do not have such a page, why not? (This is also an opportunity to review anything you'd care to discuss prior to your final exam and to talk about lessons learned in the course.)

Part 2 Respond to Classmate’s Post

Axel’s post

I have accounts on LinkedIn and Facebook, and previously had an account on MySpace back in 2008 or so, but my involvement on the social networks are minimal at best. LinkedIn is a sort of "set it and forget it" type of social network that I really only update when I'm interested in what types of jobs are available out there. I was much more active on Facebook during the Presidential election campaigns in 2016 but I soon realized making posts about my favorite candidate was not going to change anyone else's mind, but only served to reinforce the candidate they already had in mind. That idea translated into, "What's the point of Social Media anyway?" so I haven't done much on it since except catch up with old friends and family from time to time.

I choose not to post much because I would rather people judge me based on their impressions of me in real life versus what I post. I believe how a person behaves in real life should be identical to how they behave on social media. It is unfortunate I tend to see much more misplaced anger and bravado on social media than I do in real life. This very fact helps me understand that when a person makes negative comments it is because something is missing from their lives and not the other way around.

Steve’s Post

Social Media.

I have social media accounts on Linkedin and Facebook, maybe even Myspace. I do not participate, interact or look at any of it other than when I am looking for a job on Linkedin. I’m not a fan of people using social media to post every thought that comes out of their head, some of those thoughts should stay in and cook a bit more before coming out. Some should never come out. Unfortunately the internet is forever and things come back to haunt people. It’s a cruel reality. I’m trying to teach my kids that everything they do at this point is most likely recorded and available on the internet. I don’t post anything as the internet is a cruel place where people can hide behind a screen and ridicule you.

There is a lot of research supporting the idea of restricting or quitting social media and how it will improve your life.
