Use-Case: Medical Staff Respond to Alert

1 Brief Description

When a nurse assistant

Receives an alert from a patient

They determine if the alert is serious

So that they can respond to the patient and/or notify the responsible physician if necessary.

2 Actor Brief Descriptions

2.1 Nurse/Assistant – the first responder who reviews the patient alert

2.2 Physician – the attending physician who reviews the patient alert

3 Preconditions

The glucose monitoring system has received an alert from a patient

4 Normal Flow of Events

The use case begins when an alert is received from a patient’s smartphone.

1. The system adds the alert to the patient’s records

2. The system invokes Subflow 6.1 with nurse/assistant as target

The use case ends

5 Alternative Flows

5.1 The alert requires physician attention

If after step 2 of the normal flow the nurse assistant decides the alert requires intervention

by the attending physician:

2.1 The nurse/assistant triggers notification of the attending physician.

2.3 The system invokes Subflow 6.1 with physician as target.

The use case ends.

6 Sub Flows

6.1 Medical staff member responds to alert

6.1.1 System notifies the medical staff member that a patient alert has occurred

6.1.2 The medical staff member reviews the alert

6.1.3 The system displays alert information

6.1.4 The medical staff member contacts the patient

6.1.5 The medical staff member records a note on the alert

6.1.6 The system adds the note to alert information

6.2 Subflow alternate flow : patient response attached to alert

If at step 6.1.3 of subflow 6.1 there are patient text or voice responses attached to the

6.1.3.1 The medical staff member reviews the patient’s text or voice response.

6.1.3.2 The system displays and/or plays the patient’s text or voice response.

The sub flow is rejoined at step 6.1.4.

7 Key Scenarios

7.1 The alert does not require physician intervention

7.2 The alert does require physician intervention

8 Post-conditions

8.1 The alert is recorded in the patient’s records, and the action taken by the nurse

assistant is recorded for the alert.

8.2 The alert is recorded in the patient’s records, and the action taken by the nurse

assistant is recorded for the alert, and the action taken by the physician is also

recorded for the alert.
