I. Key considerations of the location of the new project

This paper presents consideration of new office based on local area networks suggested in the case study. As an employed manager to the company mentioned in the case study, I would consider the following key considerations for the implementation of the new project:

· Connectivity and security

The location of the office would require consideration of connectivity and security issues. This include means that a location with access to internet cables and wireless access points would be more preferable. This will help to determine what type of data and where it should be stored for security purposes. In addition, the type of devices to be installed as well as designation of people who should use them should also be considered when determining the location of the new office.

· Redundancy:

The new office should contain backup devices in the network. For this reason, I would recommend that the new locations should be able to accommodate at least two servers. This will help activities to continue in case one server is under maintenance, the other one will have to immediately take over.

· Standardization

In order to ensure the network runs smoothly at the new office, hardware and software to be used would have to be standard. This will help to reduce the cost for maintenance, updates as well as repairs.

· Disaster recovery

The other important think to consider for the location of the new office will be availability of back-up power needed in case the network or server crashes. This will help to keep data in case of any disaster which might occur.

· Growth

As a manager at the new office, I will have to anticipate how the company should have to be in the next five years. For this reason, the new office should have access to small business server. However, in case employees will increase from 40 to more than 75, then this server will have to be replaced.

Based on the above mentioned considerations, as a manager employed at the new office, I would suggest that this is implemented at Washington.

II. LAN topography

A. Description of LAN topology to be used at the new location

The new office should have access to local area network opportunities. As a new manager, I would choose between Wi-Fi or Ethernet LAN topologies to connect devices. The access points to be used at the new office will help to manage network traffic to and from the local devices. In addition, these will; also help to interface LN with outside networks. Another possible LAN topology consideration at the new office should be broadband routers which can also perform functions of an access point.

B. Comparison between LAN topology possibilities based on their relative strengths and weaknesses

LAN topology

Strength

Weakness

Wi-Fi LAN

More wireless access points, can manage network traffic flow to and from the local devices, possibility of interface the local network with the outside networks and more flexibility. Availability of Wi-hotspots

Slow connection, short performance distance, atmosphere can cause problems

Ethernet

Much faster due to cabling, can produce speeds anywhere from 100 Mbps to 1000 Mbps and even beyond. Fast, stable and deliver consistent speeds

Can’t move once connected to a spot, limitation in where to place a computer

C. Determination of the appropriate LAN topology needed for the location

From the above mentioned details regarding comparison about strengths and weaknesses of each of the LAN topologies to be used, as a new manager at the new office, I would recommend that Ethernet should be used. This is due to its very high speed compared to that of Wi-Fi which could be very slow. As the internet speed is very fast, activities at the new office will have to be smoothly conducted.
