IT 328 Microsoft Project Tutorial This tutorial will walk you through how to insert a new task into a Gantt chart, assign predecessors, assign resources, and highlight a task.

1. First, open your project file.

2. In the task list, identify where you want the new task. Right-click on a task. Your new task will be inserted above this task. Then click on Insert Task.

3. Double-click on the new task.

4. In the Task Information window, under the General tab, you can type in a task name and set the duration. You can use the up and down arrows to set the duration.

5. To set the predecessor, click on the Predecessors tab. Note: Setting the predecessor enables you place your new task where you want in the project timeline. Then, click in the Task Name box, and an arrow drop-down menu will appear. Click on the arrow drop-down menu and select the task’s predecessor. Then click OK.

6. If you need to adjust the predecessor for other tasks, double-click on a task when you are

viewing the task list. The Task Information window will pop up. Then you can select the Predecessors tab again and set the predecessor.

7. To assign a resource (the person who will be responsible for the task), click on the Resources

tab. Then click on the Resources Name box, and a drop-down menu will appear. Click on the drop-down arrow and you can assign a resource.

8. To highlight your new task, first click on the task number to select the whole line. Then, right- click on the task number.

9. Then, in the menu, select the drop-down button next to the paint bucket icon.

10. Then, select the color that you want to use to highlight the task.

11. Your task will now be highlighted.
