Operating system security (OS security) is the process of ensuring OS integrity, confidentiality and availability. OS security refers to specified steps or measures used to protect the OS from threats, viruses, worms, malware or remote hacker intrusions. OS security encompasses all preventive-control techniques, which safeguard any computer assets capable of being stolen, edited or deleted if OS security is compromised. The best way to keep up with OS security is to download all updates and patches that your OS provider push out as updates.
OS security may be approached in many ways, including adherence to the following:
Performing regular OS patch updates:
· Installing updated antivirus engines and software
· Scrutinizing all incoming and outgoing network traffic through a firewall
· Creating secure accounts with required privileges only (i.e., user management)
Operating system comparison: The Windows OS security and other OS
We all know that Windows OS was not the best in the world of OS security because we always worried about hacking, malware, Trojan, logic bomb, and so many others. Linux and Mac OS has some security flaws on their own because I remember my sister’s mac laptop had a virus and I had to do some research to be able to remove it. I know people will say it’s an isolated issue but Apple has had more security vulnerabilities in 2010 than Microsoft. However, the use of vulnerabilities as a numerical indicator of security. How important is OS Security?
Operating system is the brain of the machine, we need to take good care of it by performing a good computer clean up, run the anti-virus/malware software every couple of month, In the enterprise environment the IT administrator can enable the computer to do automatically every time we shut down the assign workstation. Security is not only an IT issue but every one that use a computer. One thing a user should know if it does not look right do not click on it, Pop up is a big issue because click ok might crash or delete lots of important file and the user might have to re install their Operating system or even buy a new hard drive.
How to prevent attack?
Attacks might come from a simple pop up, download an infected file, an email or hackers.
“Warning!
Your computer is infected!
This computer is infected by spyware and adware”.
The average user will be quick to click ok because they do not know if this a malware, the computer might run a little slow and they think they have a virus or malware and this type of message will prompt them to download or buy a product that removes the virus. The names of these products frequently contain words like Antivirus, Shield, Security, Protection, or Fixer. Trust me they will pay top dollars for it and a monthly fee.
Security is a team and knowledge effort if we understand what to do in case of malware attack we can limit the damages.
