Each of you is required to create a Pecha Kucha-style presentation which will be shared with the class this Wednesday, December 2nd. The topic of the presentation is the main idea (the conclusion) presented in your seminar paper. In essence, you should walk us through what you say in your paper, but you may take some creative liberties and provide commentary or other thoughts and analysis. You can see my demonstration of how to navigate PowerPoint in order to create a Pecha Kucha presentation at the 32-minute mark of the Week 13 class recording. I highly recommend that you re-watch my demonstration. I also recommend that you take a look at some Pecha Kucha presentations which you can find on youtube. Right before my demonstration in the class recording, I show an example of a Pecha Kucha created by one of my previous students. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me if you are having any issues creating your presentation. The final copy should be uploaded to Canvas as a .ppt file before class starts on Wednesday. Key steps to create the Pecha Kucha:

1. Make sure you format the slides as blank slides so that you can insert your images easily. You can do this by clicking on the drop-down menu next to ‘New Slide’ on the Home menu. I think it is easiest to just delete the first slide and then add new ones which are formatted as blank.

2. You should have 10 slides which play for 20 seconds each (you may also have 20 slides

for 20 seconds each, if you prefer). Under the Transitions menu, you will need to uncheck the box which says ‘On Mouse click’ and check the box which says ‘after’. For each slide, set the transition to occur after 20:00 seconds. You can also set the ‘duration’ of the transition to the lowest setting (00:01), but you may try different transition timings if you like. You will do this for each slide (you can just click ‘Apply to all’ or you can do it manually for each one).

3. Each slide should have one image, or a minimal amount of text (no more than a few

words). You could also have a graph or chart, but keep in mind that it will only be on the screen for 20 seconds, so it cannot be too complex. I recommend that you use Getty images which are licensed to be used freely. Simply copy the images from the site and paste them into your slides. You can type in some search terms in order to find images which you want to use in your presentation. You may also do a Google Image search, and then under the Tools menu click on ‘Usage rights’, then select ‘Creative Commons licenses’. Here is the Getty site: https://www.gettyimages.com/ Please be mindful of the fact that the images you present should be consumable by a wide audience of varying backgrounds, and that your presentation should adhere to professional and academic standards of decorum. Please refrain from using images which would be considered too graphic or otherwise inappropriate in a classroom setting (get in touch with me if you would like any clarification about this).

4. You will record your audio directly into the PowerPoint slideshow. I recommend that

you do this slide-by-slide. You have 20 seconds for each slide, and it is easy to see when

you have recorded yourself for 20 seconds. Under the Insert menu, you will see an option to insert audio. Record yourself speaking and then insert the recording into the slide when you are happy with it.

5. Once you insert audio, there will be an icon of a speaker on the slide to indicate that you have inserted audio. You will need to hide this icon so that it does not interfere with the image on the slide. Click on the speaker icon in the slide. You should see a Playback menu at the top of the window. Under Playback, check the box which says ‘hide during show’ and also, next to ‘start’, choose the option to start automatically. You will have to do this for the audio on each slide. Then, when you choose to play the slideshow, it should hide the icon and also start the sound for the slide automatically when the slide appears.

6. The end result should be a .ppt file which can be played as a slideshow. The images will appear for 20 seconds each and you will provide recorded narration which will play automatically in sequence as each slide appears.
