Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum length of time that can be allowed before a business process is restored to normal after the occurrence of a disaster so that to avoid unacceptable consequences related with disruption in business continuity.

The work posted on TechTarget website by Margaret (2011), defines RTO as ‘maximum time that can be tolerated that a network system could be down after a disaster occurs. RTO determines the how far disruptions can interrupt normal operations and the amount of revenue because of a disaster in each time frame. Determining the cost of downtime for various applications operating in the enterprise depends on long term and short-term factors

Techopedia website explains that RTO is the maximum length of time that can be allowed between occurrence of a disaster and the resumption to normal operations and service levels. RTO does not exactly fix recovery from disaster by given date, but it helps to anticipate the longest possible taken before recovery to normal operations resume. RTO is determined during business impact analysis exercise when drawing out business continuity plans. RTO goes hand in hand with Recovery Point Objective (RPO) which is defined as amount of data that can be lost within a measured time.

Druva.com was the third site I referred which found on Google. It was basically a good medium between the two previous sites. It focused equally on both RTO and RPO but was not as in depth overall as Wikipedia was. This site explained of them well enough, including provided examples of each. The rest of the article was dedicated to promoting their solutions and products. (Jaspreet, S. - 2008, March 22).

Backup procedures

Method -I: By Sending an email

· Step-1: Save the Lab assessment Worksheet file in your local computer.

· Step-2: Open your email account using your preferred browser in the computer

· Step-3: Once you have opened email, compose a new email and attach the file to that email & send the email to preferred safe email of your other account.

Method -II: Saving to Cloud

· Step-1: Save the Lab Report Document file in your local computer.

· Step-2: Open your email account using your preferred browser in the computer

· Step-3: Once you have opened email, in your email, click on the Google apps icon then click on google ‘ Drive ’ from the drop-down list

· Step-4: On the new Drive page, click on New to upload file from the drop-down list.

· Step-5: On the new pop-up window, locate the location of your file and double click it to upload the file to your google drive.

Recovery procedures

· In case of loss of data from your computer system, the first thing you check is look for the e-mail that you sent to yourself (same email or other email account). In the real world, if I would not have found it then, I would have keep looking by focusing on the methods I used to back the file up which is saved the file in cloud.

· You can recover the Lab report document from your google Drive email account.

· To recover, you must log into email account using the preferred browser.

· Click on the Google apps icon and then click on Drive from the drop-down list to open the Drive page window.

· Select the file and click on Download to download the file to your computer, and save it in your preferred location

Personal Procedure in terms of RTO

RTO is the point of time when operations of the company will be up and running, and this point of time is in the future. The procedures used to recover data and return operations to normal are as follows.

· Backup the worksheet file to a secure online location

· In case of disaster and the file is lost, recover the file from the alternative source

· Resume the normal operations within the shortest time possible.

Testing for backup and recovery procedures

I have verified the backup file whether is safe or not by temporarily switching operations to alternative site and tried to open the backup file from backup source.

· Writing and Keeping the availability of detailed data recovery procedures

· Documenting the data recovery procedures for future reference.

· Training employees of the organization on how to respond to critical situations can help lower RTO by using he recovery procedure document.
