PROCESSING ON A WEB SERVER

What happens on the backend when you visit a website and order something, and pay for it?

© Parish BushnellInformation Systems

THREE-TIER ARCHITECTURE •Almost all e-commerce applications use three-tier architecture.

1.User tier - consists of computers, phones, other devices with browsers that request and process Web pages.

2.Server tier - consists of computers running Web servers and application programs. 3.Database tier - consists of computers running a DBMS that processes SQL requests to retrieve and store data.

SOA The Cloud will not exist if not for SOA (Service-Oriented Architecture) In SOA interactions among computing devices are defined as services in a formal, standardized way known as web services Enables pieces of the Cloud to fit together

SOA IN PRACTICE

© Parish BushnellInformation Systems

USING SOA PRINCIPLES… Each organization formally states data it expects to receive with request and data it promises to return in response The work of the organization is encapsulated (hidden) in the organization Every interaction is done exactly same way

© Parish BushnellInformation Systems

USING SOA PRINCIPLES: ENCAPSULATION No organization needs knowledge of who works in another organization, or how it accomplishes its work Each organization free to change personnel task assignments, change processes for performing its services Organizations could dynamically create many new groups/teams without the need to change anything it does

SOA PRINCIPLES APPLIED TO THREE-TIER ARCHITECTURE

To be able to mix and match services, organizations need to agree on standard ways of formatting and processing service requests and data. This leads to the need for cloud standards and protocols

PROTOCOLS SUPPORTING WEB SERVICES Protocol - A set of rules and data structures for organizing communication. Computers need to use protocols so they can exchange data.

© Parish BushnellInformation Systems

SOME WEB SERVICE PROTOCOLS (WSDL, SOAP, XML, AND JSON) WSDL (Web Services Description Language)

Standard for describing services, inputs, outputs, other data supported by a Web service. Documents coded according to this standard are machine readable and can be used by developer tools for creating programs to access the service.

SOAP (no longer an acronym)

Protocol for requesting Web services and for sending responses to Web service requests.

XML (eXtensible Markup Language)

Markup language used for transmitting documents. Contains much metadata that can be used to validate format and completeness of a document, but includes considerable overhead (see Figure 6-15a).

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation)

Markup language used for transmitting documents. Contains little metadata and is preferred for transmitting volumes of data between servers and browsers. While the notation is the format of JavaScript objects, JSON documents can be processed by any language (see Figure 6-15b).

Transmit documents between servers or devices on the internet.

EXAMPLE XML DOCUMENT

EXAMPLE JSON DOCUMENT

• Easier to use alternative to XML

• Set of rules for storing and exchanging data

• Better than XML at carrying data

• Easier to read than XML • Less data when using

JSON

HOW DO ORGANIZATIONS USE THE CLOUD? 1st Cloud Services from Vendors 2nd Content Delivery Networks 3rd Using Web Services Internally

© Parish BushnellInformation Systems

CLOUD SERVICES SaaS is a software licensing and delivery model in which software is licensed on a subscription basis and is centrally hosted. Sometimes known as on demand software (Google Drive, Salesforce.com) PaaS is a category of cloud computing services that provides a platform allowing customers to develop, run, and manage web applications without the complexity of building and maintaining the infrastructure typically associated with developing and launching an app (MS Azure) IaaS is a service of providing physical computers or Virtual machines (Amazon EC2, Rackspace)

CONTENT DELIVERY NETWORKS FROM CLOUD VENDORS

Content delivery network (CDN) System of hardware and software stores user data in many different geographical locations and makes data available on demand Polls datacenters around the world to see which one can serve up content more quickly If a connection drops from one data center another can take its place Used to store and deliver content seldom changed

CDN BENEFITS

USING WEB SERVICES INTERNALLY

Example private internet (intranet) on its own infrastructure

HOW CAN ORGANIZATIONS USE CLOUD SERVICES SECURELY?

Remote Access Using VPN: Actual Connections

WATCH THE THREE TIERS IN ACTION! WITH ZULILY!!! 1. Commerce server requests

“something cool” data from DBMS.

2. DBMS reads from database then returns boring data to commerce server.

3. Commerce server formats Web page with data and sends html version of page to user’s computer.

4. Customer places “something cool” in shopping cart.

5. Customer checks out, commerce server program processes payment, schedules inventory processing, arranges shipping

6. Database Updated via DBMS
