WHAT DO BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOFTWARE?
Every computer has an operating system and application programs

WHAT DO BUSINESS PROFESSIONALS NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SOFTWARE?
Native applications (Thick Client) (e.g. MS Office) Web applications (Thin Client) (e.g. Google Drive, Canvas) Thin vs. Thick Client applications

OWN VERSUS LICENSE License
– Right to use specified number of copies
– Limits vendor’s liability Site License – Flat fee to install software product on
all company computers or all computers at a specific site
Open Source – No license fee

VIRTUALIZATION Process by which one physical computer hosts many different virtual computers within it. The host OS may hosts many virtual machines.
© Parish BushnellInformation Systems
VIRTUAL MACHINES
Runs within the host operating system on the physical computer as an application.
AKA - “Running operating systems within your operating system”
Example running Windows OS as an application on your Mac OS on your physical iMac

VIRTUALIZATION 3 TYPES PC virtualization
Personal computer hosts several different operating systems (hard drive) • Mac OS is the host operating
system
•Windows 7 is being ran as PC Virtualization within Mac OS
•Windows 7 DOES NOT have its own set of hardware, but must share the hardware from the Mac computer
•Share CPU, Memory, NIC, Storage, etc.

VIRTUALIZATION 3 TYPES
Server virtualization Server computer hosts other server computers Makes cloud computing feasible
Each customer that signs up for cloud computing very rarely get their own hardware server

VIRTUALIZATION 3 TYPES
Desktop Virtualization The virtual computer is stored on a remote server and delivered to the user's device.

WHAT TYPES OF APPLICATIONS EXIST, AND HOW DO ORGANIZATIONS OBTAIN THEM?
Horizontal market applications Apps common across all organizations and industries (e.g. word processing, spreadsheet)
Vertical market applications Serves the needs of a specific industry (e.g. dental, higher-ed)
One of a kind applications Specific, unique need (e.g. US military)

WHAT IS FIRMWARE? Special software installed on read-only memory (ROM)
Printers, print servers, communication devices.
As if program’s logic is designed into device’s circuitry.
Can be changed and upgraded like other software, but normally a task for IS professionals.

IS OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE A VIABLE ALTERNATIVE?
GNU - general public license agreement Open Office (a Microsoft Office look-alike) Firefox (a browser) MySQL (a DBMS, see Chapter 5) Apache (a Web server, see Chapter 6) Ubuntu (a Windows-like desktop operating system) Android (a mobile-device operating system) Cassandra (a NoSQL DBMS, see Chapter 5) Hadoop (a BigData processing system, see Chapter 9)

YUMMY/SILLY EXAMPLE OF OPEN SOURCE
© Parish BushnellInformation Systems
WHAT ABOUT CLOSED SOURCE SOFTWARE? Source code is protected and only available to trusted employees. Only trusted programmers can make changes to closed source projects.

DEVELOPING NATIVE APPLICATIONS Run on operating systems and devices. Developed using heavy-duty, professional programming languages. Gives programmers close control. Enable creation of sophisticated and complex user interfaces. Only run on OS that they are programmed for.
Go download MS Office for Windows and try to put it on a MAC (no can do!)

DEVELOPING WEB (THIN-CLIENT) APPLICATIONS
No need to really worry about the operating system. Written by professional programmers, technically- oriented Web developers and business professionals. Users obtain thin-client applications via the Web.
Limited by browser capabilities. User experience varies.

WHY ARE MOBILE SYSTEMS INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT?
© Parish BushnellInformation Systems
BYOD – BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE BYOD Policy – Statement concerning employee’s permissions and responsibilities when they use their own device within the organization they work for. Mobile Device Management (MDM) Software - Allow company to install software on personal devices. Resistance of course, but if you want full access to the corporate network/data. Maybe consider a container app (MAM)?
