project 2
IS 3150 Introduction to Information Systems Project II (short version)
All written deliverables should be professionally prepared. This is included implicitly in the requirements (especially since we are business students). While deliverables are not graded for grammatical and typographical errors (this is not an English or Literature course), the language should be professional, coherent, and comprehensible. If need be, please feel free to utilise the writing centre (please refer to the syllabus) prior to submission.
Process Modeling (20 points)
You set up a meeting with Storm, the warehouse manager at Arctic Winds to discuss the goods receiving process. There may be ambiguity in her description because no one knows what the proper procedure should be. Her description is based on current general practices and along with what she thinks should be the correct way. As such, you may invent details as needed. It will be good to introduce innovative steps, or routine steps that create more transparency and/or accountability. Below are the notes from your meeting.
- If a truck containing perishable items (such as dairy and meat) arrives at the store, the temperature of the truck is checked to ensure the items were transported properly. If the temperature of each product is within range/acceptable, the cases for that product are removed from the truck for storage. If not, the cases are rejected.
- If the truck contains non-perishable items, the cases are removed from the truck for storage.
- The removed cases are checked for three conditions:
- are the cases damaged?
- are the items expired?
- do they require special handling?
- If the cases are damaged and/or the items are expired, the cases are rejected. If they require special handling, they are moved to a special storage.
- If they are do not require special handling, they are moved to the storeroom with all other acceptable items.
(1) Using the description, along with any details you deem fit, draw a flowchart for the above process using Visio (or equivalent). Paste your flowchart on a word document as a picture. (15 points). For exceptional work, do an appropriate and accurate swimlane OR hierarchical flowchart that demonstrates cross-functional/cross-department processes. Include details as needed (please see rubric).
(2) Discuss how you think the process should be managed in terms of IS personnel[footnoteRef:1] required and the corresponding functional area(s)/functional area information system(s)[footnoteRef:2]. There is no perfect answer. But some answers are better than others. Be sure to explain; you’re the expert hired here. (5 points). [1: Be sure to review the IS occupations from Mod 1.] [2: Be sure to review the different types of information systems in Mod 1.]
Grading Rubric
The grading rubric is given below. Approximately 15% of the grade is allocated to truly exceptional work.
Your work will be evaluated on the accuracy of the results and ability to apply the concepts. Submit your work on Canvas. There should be a word document that contains (1) your flowchart and the corresponding write up.
