Case Study I
A management conferencing system
Simple conferencing or bulletin board systems are now widely used but these usually have a character-based used interface (because they can be accessed via dial-up lines), a command language which is cryptic and text-only presentation. This project involves the building of a management conferencing system to be used by managers via their personal workstations. Multiple conferences should be supported.
This system is different from more general conferencing systems in a number of ways:
- The workstations all have bit-mapped graphic screens and are connected by a fast local area network.
- There is no need to support slow dial-up lines.
- The managers using the system require a very easy-to-use user interface.
- A text-based, command language interface is not acceptable.
- Mixed text and graphics should be supported.
- It should incorporate an electronic mail facility.
- The user community is a closed one.
- It is possible to incorporate knowledge of particular roles and individuals in the system which may lead to some individuals only being concerned with particular conferences.
