Introduction

American democracy itself became a focus of contention during the 2016 election. For instance, Donald Trump repeatedly raised concerns about voter fraud both during and after the election, although no evidence to support his claims has been provided yet. Separate from claims of fraud, the U.S. intelligence community has determined that the Russian government attempted to influence the results of the 2016 presidential election through cyberattacks.

voter registration: A system adopted by the states that requires voters to register prior to voting. Some states require citizens to register as much as 30 days in advance, whereas others permit Election Day registration.

party realignment: (1) Change in the leadership, issues, power base, or voting coalition within a party. (2) The displacement of the majority party by the minority party, usually during a critical election period.
