Thesis Statement
This statement presents the problem or issue you intend to research and should be clear
and concise. You can read more about how to write a thesis statement by clicking here. Your
introductory paragraph should be at least three sentences long and should have your thesis
statement in it. For your IP3 paper, please improve your thesis statement.
Research Question
This should represent your Thesis Statement, but in question form. Your “research
question” (RQ) should correlate to your thesis statement. Try to create a minimum of three
research questions. Below are several sample research questions:
RQ: What are the factors associated with recidivism for inmates who are release from prison?
RQ: Why do citizen-complaints against officers decrease when officers wear body cams?
RQ: Why do use-of-force reports decrease when officers wear body cameras?
RQ: Why does recidivism decrease when prisoners receive job training skills?
Hypothesis
A hypothesis is your prediction about something. A hypothesis is based on observations
and experiments. You are predicting a relationship between variables, factors or situations. For
example, if I were using the first RQ from above (RQ: What are the factors associated with
recidivism?), then my Hypothesis could be:

HR: Indigent socio-economic factors will predict recidivism in ex-offenders.
Also, briefly identify your proposed solution to the problem. How might your working
solution solve the problem? Click here to read more about how to write a hypothesis. You will
continue to develop your hypothesis throughout this course all the way through Unit 5!
Measurement and Analysis Approach
Define the key points you propose to research. How will you hypothetically analyze the
information (data) that you find from all the articles that you read? You can discuss or use
information that is related to any crime statistics that you might find that are relevant to your
issue – or you can use the information that other authors have found. Click here to read how to
write your measurement and analysis section.
Annotated Bibliography (aka Applicable Resources)
Identify 5 sources you have found that are relevant to your purpose statement. For
example, identify case studies, library articles, website information and other scholarly
resources. If an article that you’re reading already has an abstract written, then you can modify
that to suit your needs. Click here to see five sample annotated bibliographies.
Ethical Standards
What are your ethical and legal responsibilities to ensure that your research will be
ethical? Do you need approval from an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to conduct your
research?

• Click here to read about an unethical syphilis experiment that was conducted for 40 years
on African American men in Tuskegee Alabama.
• If you propose to administer a survey to humans, then you must ensure that it is ethical.
For example, giving a psychological survey to a mental health patient who is already
emotionally traumatized could possibly be unethical. That’s why all research must get
IRB approval before they can be conducted.
• If you collect preexisting data from other research articles or from online articles, then
you will not need IRB approval.
Do you need IRB approval for your research proposal? You decide!
