Running Head: IOM AND THE NURSING PROSPECTS

IOM AND THE NURSING PROSPECTS 6

Impact on nursing of the 2010 IOM report on the Future of Nursing

IOM impact on nursing education

Due to the increase in the transformation of the healthcare system and the continued existence of the sophisticated nursing practices, there is an increase in the demand for the nurses to advance their education. The current healthcare system is experiencing a change in the technology, complicated requirements by the patients, reduction in the length of patient stay in the healthcare facilities, and the transformation from the acute care system to the primary based healthcare system. As this change continues to accumulate day by day, there is a need for the professional nurses to consider their level of experience as well as education in order for them to remain effective and competitive towards providing efficient and safer patient care (Catherine, 2013).

Nurses who have managed to acquire the necessary skills through advancing their level of education have the ability to provide efficient health education and care to the patients as well as the families of the patients. Report from the Institute of Medicine shows that nursing workforce is aiming at improving the healthcare of the Americans through having a change in the nursing career. Therefore, this offers an opportunity for the nurses to advance their education for them to meet the demands of providing competitive healthcare services to the patients. This also offers them opportunities of being the most upper hand candidates, in any case, there are job vacancies that are related to their field of study.

Institute of Medicine indicates that 80 percent of nurses are needed to attain a baccalaureate degree in nursing so that when it reaches the year 2020, this proportion shall have been attained. Education is therefore aimed at enhancing quality nursing care to the patients through having evidence-based practices and critical thinking (Institute of Medicine of the National Academics, 2011). For that reason, it is the role of nurses to make sure that they possess the needed education and training grade through the use of the enhanced education system. It is also the role of the nurses to ensure that there is motivation of other nurses who are having the associate degree to acquire Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Due to the present improvement and the technological change in the healthcare system, it is through the advancement of education that nurses would be in a position to operate in such environment due overcome the challenges that might come their way.

Impact of IOM on the nursing practice

Based on the report by the IOM, Americans have the right to be provided with quality healthcare. Healthcare is aimed at improving the well-being of the patients. Both public and primary care nurses have to work as a team towards improving the overall health of the population as well as addressing their needs (Institute of Medicine of the National Academics, 2011). Both federal and the state government always update and standardize their goal of practices and legislation. Nurses have the obligation to practice as per their uppermost grade of education. IOM report indicates that these nurses have the ability to come up with inventive approaches which can help in improving the healthcare. Nevertheless, many healthcare firms or industries are not tapping into the abilities of the nurses. A number of obstacles are present and this tamper with the nursing practice and some of the obstacles are caused by the laws and the policies; a broken system of the United States healthcare; excessive turnover among nurses; and the aging workforce (California Action Coalition, 2011).

However, with the existence of the IOM, some of these barriers are no longer there and this has led to the progress in the nursing practices. Nurses are now capable of practice based on their education level and the training they acquired. Medicare program expansion is also in place to cover some of the advancing nurses. Nurses, therefore, get the opportunity to deliver based on their scope of practice and as per the laws of the state. Registered nurses can now perform admission assessment and certify the clients for the community healthcare services.

Changing the practice to meet the goals of the IOM report

Working within the primary healthcare setting, the most important objective has been to attain the goals of the IOM by putting much focus on the projects that have the capacity of transforming primary kind of healthcare into the public care. I am also considering working in the public hospital to offer patient information that would be important in minimizing the healthcare cost and enhancing the health outcomes of the patients. I will also be holding free clinic healthcare services to the public especially those who are suffering from the chronic illnesses. The free clinic will be purposely meant to offer the preventive care to reduce hospitalization cases as well as the frequent visits to the doctors. The overall goal would increase the teamwork between the public and the primary care.

Impact of IOM report on the nurse leadership role

This report is encouraging nurses to think critically and improve the quality of the healthcare to ensure better health outcome for the patients. Nurses are always the advocate for the patients and it is, therefore, necessary for them to work as a team in the redesigning of the healthcare. It is, therefore, necessary for the nurses to perform leadership role when it comes to designing, implementation, and the assessment of the healthcare (Catherine, 2013). IOM report recommends that decision making from the public, private, and the government has to be the one which ensures that nurses are provided with leadership opportunities during the time they are still in the colleges to help in preparing them for the upcoming leadership responsibilities in the nursing career.
