Investigative Report: Example

The purpose of this exercise is to show me that after this class, you will be able to “critically analyze current political and economic events in Asia.”

Essentially, you are in a positive to tell others an “interesting story” about Asia, and I look forward to be “entertained.”

Obviously I don’t want you to repeat what we have already covered in the class, but an easy way to do this is to follow up some of the issues we cover.

As of today (11/25/19), there are several stories unfolding.

1

Investigative Report: Example

The landslide victory for pro-democracy camps in HK’s district council elections (11/24/19).

District councils?

Electoral results?

Implications for the HK protests?

Implications for Chinese government?

Investigative Report: Example

2. North Korea just fired another 2 “projectiles” this Thursday. NK further indicated “no longer interested” nuclear talk.

Why did NK do it again this time? What does Mr. Kim want?

What does this mean for the future of NK nuclear/missiles crisis?

What can the U.S. do?

Investigative Report: Example

3. Goo Hara, a famous K-pop star in South Korea, committed suicide.

How do we reason with this heartbreaking tragedy?

K-pop and the Korean entertainment industry?

High suicide rate?

Social/gender inequality in South Korea and Asia?

Other current events that I found on CNN’s Asia that seem quite relevant to our class discussion include:

A leaked document about Xinjiang’s re-education camp

HK protesters celebrate after Trump signed HK human rights act

China has overtaken the United States with the most diplomatic posts across the world
