Read Baumrind and Milgram’s articles on the ethics of Milgram’s obedience study.   

 

Baumrind, D. (1964).  Some thoughts on the ethics of research: After reading Milgram’s

“Behavioral Study of Obedience.”  American Psychologist, 19, 421-423.

Milgram, S.  (1964).  Issues in the study of obedience: A reply to Baumrind.  American

Psychologist, 19, 848-852.

 

In 4-6 pages answer the following questions:

1) What are Baumrind’s arguments concerning the ethics of Milgram’s study? Be specific.

 

2) Does Baumrind miss any ethical questions?

 

3) How does Milgram fully address the concerns about his studies? Again, be specific.

 

4) Do you think Milgram adequately addresses Baumrind’s concerns? Why or why not?

 

5) What is your own position on the ethics of Milgram’s study? Do you agree with Baumrind, do you agree with Milgram, or do you have another position entirely? You must state an opinion, “they both have good arguments” isn’t a position! Support your position.
