Introduction

Cultural competence is a principal foundation that is necessary for effective clinical nursing. Because of the growing populations in the United States from different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities, nurses must possess a high level of cultural competence to forge strong patient relationships and decrease health disparities often seen in minority populations. Just like cultural awareness, cultural competence is an evolving, dynamic process that requires the nurse to always be learning and gaining knowledge on how best to care and interact with patients of all different cultures. Achieving a goal of health equality in our country requires attention to population diversity, the culture of the local health care system, and awareness of our strengths and weaknesses in regard to cultural competency when providing patient care.

Upon completion of this lesson, you will be able to:

•Describe cultural competence in nursing practice.
