Gay Rights movement – aka gay liberation movement; LGBTQ rights movement
A civil rights movement that seeks to eliminate discrimination against gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transgender, non-binary, and/or queer individuals and groups
1950 – Mattachine Society founded in Los Angeles
1955 – Daughters of Bilitis
1958 – publication of One magazine
1969 – Stonewall Inn rebellion; protest at gay bar in NYC;
starts modern LGBTQ movement
1974 – first openly gay person wins public office: Kathy Kozachenko
1977 – Harvey Milk elected to San Francisco Board of Supervisors (assassinated following year)
1979 – National march on Washington for Lesbian and Gay rights (75,000 people)
1987 – HIV/AIDS activist group formed: ACT UP
1991- Red ribbon adopted as symbol of HIV/AIDS awareness
2005 – Obama admin repeals “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, allowing LGBTQ people to serve openly in US military
2013 – Same-sex marriage legalized throughout US
2020 – applied 1964 Civil Rights act to LGBTQ community, outlawing job discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation
The Transformation of ‘Queer’
Since at least 1513, in English, ‘queer’ had meant something odd, not normal, strange, etc.
1894 – term first used in England to refer to homosexuals (as derogatory)
1914 – term first used in US to refer to homosexuals (as derogatory)
1960s – word starts to be used occasionally as not derogatory
1990s – term adopted by LGBTQ community as non-derogatory, term of gay pride
1990 - Queer Nation (offshoot of ACT UP) founded – combats violence against LGBTQ communities
Genderqueer, gender-fluid, non-binary used to refer to more complex notions of gender and sexual identification
2000s - Queer studies becomes more common in universities
